Yeah, I thought you had the carb version & they're supposed to need more octane right? You certainly don't want that thing pinging back there when you can't hear it.

Also, you should have a tag on your fuel tank inside the access panel that will ID the tank but I can't remember if they put the capacity on the tag. It's probably a RDS tank.

OK, here's a copy of the aluminum tank, it says 55 gallons. You should be able to use 50 of it.

I did not know that the 500 EFI ate 89 octane and liked it while what I would assume is the " years older" HP500 carb motor needs to eat 93 to live a long life. How many hours do you have on your 500 EFI Rick ?

270-hours. The spec tag on the intake for the 500-EFI's actually says 87 is all that's required & from what I've heard you'll only get more soot on the transom if you run higher octane. The compression is way down at 8.75:1 on these motors but it looks like the HP500 is also in that range. We also boat at 3,600' elevation which also drops the octane needs a little.

My motor has been gone over a bit

    my distributer is not stock

It has Bullet/Ultradyne cam, hydraulic roller lifters, and pushrods. JE flatop pistons, bored 30 over ,Crane gold 1.7 ratio rocker arms, 088 rectangular port heads with inconel valves, and a dart single plane intake. IMCO Powerflow exhaust

my mechanic said if I were to run 87 consistently he would want to detune it a bit.....I would imagine that would mean adjust the timing etc

I run super in my lawnmower so if possible I will look for higher octane

most marinas I have experience with have super and most the time I can pull up to a pump so I'm only worried on the Hudson run but if I start out with a full tank I should only need to fill up a few times before I get back to better gas

Yeah, I'd just stick with the 93 then. Even if you have to top off a tank of 93 with a little 87-89 it should be fine til you could get back to some 93.

Given the big price difference in gas based on octane, why would you run 93 octane if the motor calls for and is calibrated to run 89 octane?

My engine was built by a local, very successful drag racer.
    It's based on a Dart block w/4.5" bore X 4.0 stroke.
Forged, flat top pistons @ 9.25 CR.
large rectangular port heads, inconel valves
Comp hydraulic flat tappet cam (I don't remember the grind)
    Crane gold rockers
Dual plane intake, Holley 4150 850 CFM carb
Gil manifolds, w/Corsa risers and Merc pneumatic Captains Call diverters.
    Merc T-Bolt IV ignition.
I have very few hours and am still making improvements.
    And yes, I run premium.

I don't think mine is calibrated to run on 89 anymore

I average two miles per gallon. An 80 mile run to Put-in-Bay is no problem. A 100 mile run up into Lake Huron is pushing my luck so I either buy a little gas at a gas dock or take 10 gallons in plastic cans. I have never run out of gas on the water but have run it down to only two gallons left in the tank. I carry BoatU.S. towing insurance which also covers fuel delivery but I have never needed it. I have a 525 that calls for, and likes, 87 octane.

I can get 3-3.5 mpg. HP500 is 87 octane rated but I have my timing up and run 93. Gas is cheap right now, enjoy it while it lasts!

I have never paid attention to fuel usage. I would be too depressed. I go to the gas dock every time I turn around it seems and have only a stock boat..

Sorry for the hijack, but PISMO I believe you live on Lake George, have you ever been to the Dustoff or Fall picnic....just curious trying to place your boat and wondering if we have met at one of these events.....

Again sorry for the randomness and hijack
