    AQ280 Destruction

A month ago, I lost a universal at full chat, causing the destruction of my AQ in spectacular fashion. Eh, being an ex-drag racer, it happens. Replaced it, and on the maiden voyage, about 15 miles in - again at high rpm - heard the death knell of another AQ. Took it apart, and on a whim looked at the engine output shaft. It is bent to the tune of 1/4" vertical runout. Went to the local marine consignment store, and, very luckily, found an intermediate housing assembly- My GT21 uses the 6" extension one. I guess I'm pulling the motor, good thing it's a long weekend!

The culprit the second time, I assume it bent during the first, ahem, incident:

I see you're practicing the fine art of rope pushing!
In the past, some here have taken it to a whole new level.
We've all practiced at times, the last time, I pushed a 'toon boat in.

Finding the intermediate shaft at a local consignment store has to have some real luck involved.
Why did the intermediate shaft runout cause the upper outdrive gears to be destroyed the second time? Was there not an extreme vibration from the 1/4" runout even in neutral?
Who has the really nice looking yellow barrel back?

I'm thinking that when the first ujoint lost a cap, it jammed and bent the shaft (some force involved to do that!) along with destruction of the upper and intermediate housings, and snapping the intermediate drive shaft.
I hope runout caused the upper gears to break the second time, it was nearly immediate.
I'll find out next week if I found the root cause!
