Tuff Boats Canada deployed an overhead drone last week to film its Tuff 21 OB. The 21 OB runs 100-101 with stock 300XS power and a full interior. In this screen shot you can see the shadow of the drone and the driver with the transmitter. I believe it is the same model DJI Phantom drone as the the one I just got. I tried to figure out if someone else was flying the drone while he drove the boat, but I think he is doing both. He is doing a lot of what I plan to do with mine.

Yep I see it now. The driver is clearly just out for a joy ride and not bringing the Tuff 21 anywhere close to what it actually can run at, so I guess he can control the drone while he drives. At 90mph I would think there would need to be some type of "autolock" feature that allows hands off or a passenger as there are not many other boats that can stay next to a Tuff at those speeds.

The main problem is that the DJI Phantom can only fly at roughly 20mph (a little faster with more agressive carbon fiber blades and firmware settings) where our boats are much faster. If you are trying to fly the drone while driving and get your boat out of range of the drone, it will go into failsafe mode and automatically return to home (where it first took off from) and land. This is where you can get into trouble! I really need another me - one to drive the boat and another to fly the drone from somewhere else. You can change the home location on the DJI Phantom by flying it over open land and switching quickly betweeen HL (home lock) and CL (course lock) on the IOC (intelligent orientation control) on the transmitter to give it another failsafe location to land, but using failsafe is a last resort when flying these drones - especially over water. I hope to teach my wife or a friend to fly the drone from one location while I make passes under it and beside it for both type videos.

If you switch from GPS mode to ATTI (attitude) mode on the transmitter, you can make a course and get it going that way without touching the transmitter controls and it will keep going that general direction at the same altitude with the same compass orientation direction of the drone face although the speed and actual direction over land will be determined by the wind. Most people use this feature to make smooth videos of landscapes.
