    Trim won't go down

    1996 182 Medalion xl 4.3 mercruser
The trim stopped working for down only. I took the switch apart to see if that was the problem, but when I touch the down side to the hot, I hear a sound like its wanting to work, but it doesn't do anything. Any Ideas?

Probably the down solenoid on the pump.

Near the engine u should have a pump with an oil reservoir. Next to the pump should be the wires and the solenoids. Google mercruiser trim pump to see a picture of one. I will find a wirind diagram for u. Bob

You will need your serial number to order the correct solenoid if that is the problem. Check all the wiring connectors going to the pump.

You said it made noise when you hit the trim down button? so the pump is working? Mine was doing the same thing when I bought my boat. I had to put some pressure on the outdrive its self and after it started moving, it would continue to go down on its own. Try having someone stand on the outdrive when you push the button and see if it works. If that helps more than likely you have air getting in the system. Check your lines on the outdrive and in the engine compartment that run from the pump to the hydraulic trim cylinder. I found that all of the stainless Hydraulic lines on the outdrive were cracked at the crimp. They were leaking fluid everytime I actuated the trim. and when I would try to go down with the trim they would just suck air into the system and no fluid would get to the pump. Replaced the lines and it works perfectly now. Hope this helps

If is clicking then solenoid usually. If it is working and nothing is happening it is 2 things, low fluid(pump self bleeds when filled) or the ram caps on your trim rams are sticking from corrosion. This is very common on a 16 year old boat.
