    SBC Flywheel question

    Hi Gang-

I'm in a bit of a pickle with my X-18.I'm at a point where I'll be putting the third engine in this season, and haven't even taken the boat off the trailer. I have a 383 that is a single piece rear main. It has a 164 tooth flywheel. My 280 Volvo will only accept a 153 tooth flywheel. I was told that I could use a flywheel from a 86-up Camaro or Corvette. Anyone else ever run into this, and what did you do? Changing the outdrive to a Merc is not an option.

153 teeth is a common Chevy flywheel, what you need to know is the balance internal or external of your engine. Most 383 and 400's are setup for -0- balance but not all. You will also need a different starter nose to move the pinion closer to center, the 153's are 11" in diameter. I am running a 153 -0- on my 383, my engine is internally balanced. Prices run from $90+ to over $300. IMO the higher priced ones are not needed for the RPM ranges we run, big dollar ones are for high revving mills.
