Thread: Donzi 16 came with a "Interceptor" engine, yes?

    Donzi 16 came with a "Interceptor" engine, yes?

    Concerning around a 1965-1966-1967 Donzi 16, is that "Intercepter" engine a Ford or Chrysler block? I have always associated very early Donzi 16s beginning with Volvo engines.

    Then later model years with Ford engines (usually something from Holman and Moody), and now Chevy engine blocks (from Mercruiser or OMC).

    Now I understand that the word "Intercepter" used with marine engines may also mean a Chrysler block engine.

    So, here is my question, restated. Is a "Intercepter" engine mentioned with an early Donzi 16 a Ford or Chrysler engine block?

    Interceptors were Fords! They had aluminum integration on parts, which made them lighter for marine applications.At the same token it left them prone to galvanic corrosion. That is why most had to be replaced prematurely.

    The Chryslers marine engines being all iron, were reliable, affordable,and made great replacement engines.

    Joe, I'm curious about the manifolds on the engine you pictured above. Were those the only style of outlets available on the back of those log exhaust manifolds or were there other (longer, shorter, different angle) outlets available?

    I don't really Know, That engine was attached to an Eaton. I think back then most exhaust ran down and exited at the water line. Today they make center risers for them. Here's a link if your interested in upgrading the exhaust.

    Thanks Joe, I'm inclined toward originals as long as they're functionally dependable. What were the aluminum engine pieces (vs automotive cast iron) used on those interceptors?

    yes the early boats had ford interceptors they also used volvo 4 cyls. they used eaton outdrives the kind that spun upwards for trailering. the also had volvo aq 200 badged as eaton outdrives and also just plain volvo aq 200 in the latter part of that time frame. They used powerplants from many suppliers fords from eaton,HM,waukesha. they also used GM and Chrysler motors with volvo drives early 70's
