Out with the old, er... uh, sold, and in with....
What can you tell us about the new one? A few extra cubic inches maybe?

No. That would be too easy. The bell housing was the problem, when combined with the solid engine mounts (which I had attached with 3/8 carriage bolts AND 5200, so they weren't coming off). We ended up having to take off the water recirculation pump, crank pulley and the port valve cover to get enough clearance to rotate then engine.
And only then because we had a real engine mount lifting thingy that allowed us to change the balance point of the engine, allowing it to tilt it enough to make the rotation.

"That is not my truck." (Said in my best inspector Clouseau voice.) But yes, the bed is carpeted.Originally Posted by Carl C
No. Staying small block. But think more in terms of 406. . . .Originally Posted by Ghost

You will never regret this decision, and you'll laugh every time you give it a little gas and your boat jumps to get to the new throttle setting.Originally Posted by Just Say N2O

Really looking for a more comfortable rpm cruise at 45 to 50 mph. Of course any improvement in top speed won't hurt my feelings.

Glad you are following thru. I think the 406 is a great choice. Cubes rule. But also remember "weight don't break" so go light wherever possible. I think you will also enjoy the build process especially if done with some one else. I am going to do a ski boat motor rebuild this winter with my grandson and possibly a 406 roundy roundy rebuild to a marine application. Keep me in the loop on your progress.
With a 23" Solas and aq drive with 1.63 gearing that all happens under 4000rpms. At those speeds I also get over 3 miles per gallon.Originally Posted by Just Say 406

Maddad, very clever, "Just Say 406"
I like it.
I have heard, that you can buy a special hub, splined for whatever you have, that will then allow you to test a variety of different props. While there are limited props available for old style Volvos, there are LOTs of props available for everything else.
I'm thinking the Solas 23 might not be enough prop for the engine I'm building, unless I plan on running it to 6,000 rpms. Not that it wouldn't be cool, as that would be over 75 mph. I would prefer to run the engine at no more than 5,500 for outdrive durability considerations.
If I could get a 28" prop with 15% slip, I could cruise at just about 50 @ 3,500 rpms, and twisting it to 5,500 would yield a top speed of around 77 mph. On paper it all works out. . . . .
. . . .time for lots of speculation over the winter. I'll have it ALL figured out perfectly, until I put the boat in the water.

What heads, intake, cam? Using gm block or going Dart, World Products? What exhaust? If you are going the extra cube route take full advantage of them.
