Based on Don's recommendation I used 3M VHB foam tape. Covered all the surface. He said it would never come off and it does add some extra dimension

Cool, I look forward to seeing them on the Chattanooga run in a few weeks...
I got to see these up close today. They look awesome...sitting still and at 50 mph!

It's a classic Donzi, not a Donzi Classic.
They look great.
May be a dumb question, but I'm curious how you did the cutting/placing of the tape on the backs of the letters. (I like the idea of covering all the surface, but I'm used to seeing stuff stuck on with just a couple spotty patches of tape.)
I sort of imagine peeling one side, putting strips on, then pressing the letters down on a board and tracing the outline with an exacto knife. But I don't know if that's precise enough, or if it would leave a little extra material for a permanent dirt line around the edges.

The tape I had found before was only in a 1" roll, so I had to do it piecemeal. I haven't had any issues with dirt collecting behind it that I've noticed.
The VHB tapes come in a lot of varieties, but they are commonly used to mount auto trim. If you've got an auto body supplier you're friendly with I'm sure they could help you with some as well.
The other way I've mounted them was with good old 5200. This was what I did first and they're still on my boat's transom with no sign of going anywhere, but the tape was easier to use and less messy. Plus with the 5200 you have to be sure to secure them in place while it sets up so they don't sag on you. The tape is more or less press and stick.
