    refreshed 454 - Top to Bottom

    Hello Gentlemen:

    So here's the sad story - burned all bearings on my 454 - After pulling the engine and inspecting... found the center "main" backwards". Sht - There's arrows indicating correct direction... and so much BRASS - I thought I hit a gold mine!! Very shinny Yet I wasn't impressed...

    All said and done - Get ER' Done....

    Short block rebuilt - Yet, going from the previous builders receipts - You will not believe this one - I have receipts for $14000.....

    Bottom line now is - DA cam selection .... Bear in mind... this engine did perform @ 68 to 70 mph and in 3ft Chop...... very fun

    Previous cam:

    WAS CAM: HYDRAULIC: flat tappet
    Intake Exhaust
    Duration @ 0.05 218 224
    Lobe Lift .297 .300
    Valve lift .462 .469
    Lobe Separation 110

    NEW THINKING about CAM: ?????

    Part Number ES1139R (Stage 2 HP)
    Intake Exhaust
    Duration @ 0.05 224 234
    Lobe Lift .311 .325
    Valve lift .528 .553
    Lobe Separation 110\118

    Heads: are peanut - 118cc open chamber - cast # 10114156
    AND NO - I'm NOT buying new heads - already spent $1700 on these - I will make these work With the right CAM...

    Block= .030 over

    I'm believing - right choice..... Yet... As you all know - It's very important to make this decision NOW - Before installation !!!

    I truly hate wasting labor tim, from making "this decision" - I'm NOT good at selecting cams - Till I see a dyno report - then it's all easy!!

    this is a hard call,i dont know what pistons your running, the cam your looking at is a 110/118? where at are thease numbers 110* icl on the intake and 118* on the exhaust..dont add up..with your peanut port heads you really dont have too many options..the cam your looking at looks like a muscle car street can and not a marine..
    i would look at a howards cam, this one is close to the 420 hp merc cam.. and go with crower cam saver lifters which are a must.

    IMO using a flat tappet cam is just not practical anymore, you would have to run motor cycle oil to get enough zinc to get reasonable life out of it. Roller may be a tad more costly but a far better choice in the long run.

    the cam you chose works out to 114*, which is fine... while it may or may not be marine specific, it won't hurt you, and is a better choice than what you had... the only thing I would be absolutely positive of is the spring setup so you have at least .060 extra before coil bind, so whatever the assembled height is that magic number should be .620 or better...

    Thanks for the input - Yes the springs have been checked for this cam and all is well there.

    So installation happens this weekend and maybe a trial run..

    that looks like a decent cam as well as the one Mr.Fixx posted. sounds like your heads are ported. if it ran good tearing the bearings out of it, it should be a lot better with the bigger cam and running...

    let us know how it works out.
