How often should one change the filter on their hyd steering system, certain amout of hrs or years or is there a tell tell sign as to when it needs changed?

I wouldn't even use their high pressure filter. I spent years designing hydraulic systems (although, it was a very long time ago) and used nothing but low pressure, return line spin on filters. I even had a board member, who does nothing but hydraulics concur w/this when I was putting my system together. These are available from any good hydraulics shop. These sreering systems get very little use compared to a car for instance, or an industrial tractor, fork lift, etc.
Unless the system gets contaminated in some way, not very often.
