Green Paint Choices...for restoring Grumble Green

So just thinking and posting here (which I know could be dangerous)..., Let's say IF I was going to paint the boat this year AND IF I wanted to keep it the same Grumble Green color...

Then I started "thinking" and did some searches on color samples for British racing green...there are a lot of shades or versions of BRG

Then this idea of making it a "hot rod" version of grumble green came into my head.

Maybe a British racing green with a little metallic and some clear to make it really pop??? Any thoughts on whether I would be committing a crime or be voted off the island if this happened?

Don't paint it. Keep it as is. Gel looks quite good from the few pics I have seen. JMHO.

With it being a '66 and a rare color I have a suggestion. Do you know or have access to a true high end glass detailer? With gel that thick, I'd say that for $1,000 you would be pretty amazed at what they can do with color sanding and buffing. The problem will be finding someone that really knows there stuff, not just someone good. I'd say its 2/3 skill and 1/3 will. Worth starting to poke around now on the boards to see what is out there. You can always paint later.

I know...the "right thing to do" is keep it the original color. We polished out the gel, but there are some small cracks around the bow rub rail and some other areas that will need to be repaired. Matching that 45 year old gel is proving to be difficult. And we did a repair of some old damage on the side with paint matched as good a we could... so, it is kind of a patchwork right now...looks good but up close it has lots of deep scratches, some cracks and chipped gel. So it is not as good as I would like.

But that green color in the pic I posted early just looks so good...it's hard to resist not dreaming

Here are a few pics of the boat now (first pic shows a quick polish, third pic is buffed out)...

Any gel can be matched. As to pic 3, dont take this the wrong way but there would be a substantial improvement

    Why not paint the deck?
It would stay shiny for years, and be thousands less than re-gelling.

    Fixx

get some 1500 wet sanding paper with a hard block(i like to use wooden paint sticks) and sand it/block it flat..then buff it with aqua buff 1000,you will be suprised how well it willl turn out..watch the edges tho,get some 1/8'' fineline tape and mask the edges so you dont sand through the sharp edges.

At one time, all these boats were original. At the first blemish, a small fix is made which leads to more changes... Before you know it, there are very few original boats left... Leave it.

I will try to take some pictures this weekend with close up views of some of the small cracks and or gel shrinkage that the boat has. (just so you can see)

Bob, how about you set up a poll. Maybe the catagories would be

    1. Leave as is
    2. Find pro boat detailer and "grit" out a colorsand and polish
    3. Regel the entire boat
    4. Repaint the entire boat

Only if Bob promises to do what he chooses to do, no matter what the majority opinion is! LOL

I vote for painting the deck only.
