I'd guess it's a 318 from the early '60's.

that's a late 60's early 70's small block 318-340-360
early 60's 318's were the wide block with center bolt valve covers, ending in '64 except for some HD trucks... I think '64 was first year of small 273, '65 for 318, '68 was first year 340, I think '73 was first year 360..
most 4bbl marine 318's were 225hp and used Carter AFB square bore carbs
It is in a 1958 Lyman, but may not be original. I think it is tho..It was so dark in there I could not read anything. It does not have those crazy side carbs like the Fireball V8 or the early ford y block interceptors, it is a regular vertical carb. Velvet drive tranny, the Chrysler sticker is on the bell housing. It is a tough one. I hoped it was a Chevy 283 but I dont think so. Alternator was clearly replaced..

it or they are probably the OE engine or 's ..the one in the pis is a 273 cid Chrysler engine,,my brother had that same engine in his 1964 barracuda.. I was a quick little engine..looks like the exhaust manifolds were replaced tho..
If I read the block # right 2808030 273
That is a '68 273 cid truck motor.
Edit: My dodge buddy has told me that the block is a 273 cid from the mid '60's and was in allot
of Chysler/Dodge cars, trucks, bosts.

The engine you are looking at is a Chrysler A engine designed and produced in 1967 through the 1998 model year. The most common displacement was 318. 1968 they came out with 340 and then later 360 cu in. Found in Jeep Grand Cherokee 1994-98 with fuel injection conversion also most Dodge and Plymouth police cars in the 1980's with roller cam and Rochester or Carter ThermoQuad carburators. The engine also powered most Dodge trucks and almost any Chrysler product with V-8 power.
This engine and its parts are still widely available through Mopar Performance with a fairly substantial crate engine offering.
This 1960's Chrysler marine version in your photos featured full mechanical valve gear, forged crank, rods and pistons. Usually a Prestolite cast iron distributor with duel points and a Carter AFB carburator with aprox 270 hp. I believe i have a Chrysler marine engine catalogue with full specs on this engine from 1970. You could also order the engine in clockwise or counterclockwise rotation for duel engine installations. Chrysler Marine engines were all built on a special assembly line at Marysville, MI on the St. Clair River.
The older version of the 318 Chrysler - pre 1967 - was the polyspherical engine - a sort of heavy and wide semi - hemi motor that aspired to few performance applications. The poly was widely available and was identified by its valve cover lower edges which were formed in a wavy pattern.

actually the '64 Barracuda Formula S, released/hyped in the fall of '63, had the 273 4bbl as std equipment. *Some* 318 LA truck engines had solid lifters up through '67, then went hyd, while ALL of the 318 passenger engines got hyd lifters, starting in '65. There was an adj. rocker hyd. version 273/318/340. The 318/4bl marine engine was 225 hp. They made a ton of those in marine use.... I have seen 318 A engines with the 273 block castings, the only way to tell is to measure the bore/stroke with the heads off. The 318 Poly engine was huge outside, same size as a 361-383-413-440... I had a '64 push button Sport Fury a few years back that I swapped an original 318 poly for a 440, dropped right in.. I wish I still had that car..

Thanks very much. I agree from my own research it is of the 273/318/340/360 Chrysler variety, looks like a 273 or 318. As long as it is not the Gray Fireball V8...
I agree the casting # looks like 2808030 273 1 or 2806030 273 (which would still make it a '66-74 273 or 318)
Not original then if it is 60s. My Koroknay book shows that Lymans did not come thru with a 318ish Chrysler stock in the 50s.
I like the velvet drive and the added drain plugs. Looks to be well cared for from the outside anyhow..
