    The True Cost of Restoring

I'm sure you've all heard the term, "True Cost of Ownership"... Well, I'm seeing alot threads on restoration projects so I thought this might be a good place to start a thread on the cost of restorations. Here's my story so far:

    1969 16 Ski Sporter - $500
Transport from Maine to LI - $500
    Interior - $600
Late 90's LOW hour, complete 350 Merc/Alpha package with harness and gauges $2500
    Morse control - $125

I still have the hard/expensive work to do:

    pull the deck
replace tank - might as well...I'm already there. :0
    recore deck
    spray hull and deck
    cut transom for alpha
    install engine
    rig boat

I've budgeted approx $3000 for the above as I will be doing everything myself with the exception of spraying the gelcoat - I will have someone lay it down and then I'll go back and wet sand, compound, etc. I know I'm missing a few things here, but will add to the list as they come to mind.

THis will be my 3rd complete resto following my 28 Cigarette and 16 Superboat...so I'm no newbie... LOL

So what u guys think? add an extra $20k?

The problem is always...When to stop?
Once the deck is off, it's so easy to do more, and the boats are never as good as you thought before the deck came off.

I'm up to $14,000 into my $5,000 1967 Ski-sporter, and have hardly touched the engine, or the interior.

    Remember cables, gauges, trim tabs, deck/hull hardware, fuel tank, fuel lines, exhaust tips/inline mufflers, Donzi Marine Script, decals, glass/resin, Tyvek suits, respirators, gloves. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I would say that adding that extra 20k is about right.

It's like the constuction industry I've been in since 1982.
There are only two things you can be absolutely sure of:
    !) It will take longer
    2) It will cost more.
