    Volvo 290 Lubricant?

Getting close to being able to fire everything up after installing new engine and rebuilt Volvo 290. The man that rebuilt the unit suggested straight 30 wt oil. What is everybody else using with good results? My oil supplier had suggested a synthetic by Exxon/Mobil

you'll get a mix here some run motor oil some run gear oil.

I have manuals that call for both , the volvo manual calls for motor oil and the holman moody manual calls for gear oil.

there was a memo talked about to their dealers from volvo saying to go to gear oil as well. later on after the aq 290 was not being made when volvo went to the sx drive.

my 35 year old 250 blew on motor oil, I used gear oil after that.

whatever you choose make sure it is a good oil , and take heart in the fact that volvo is a strong drive and will last a long time if cared for halfway decently .

I used Mobile One gear oil for all my drives. I think it was 75 wt.
