Here are the photos that Dr. Lou Benz supplied me of the "first" 16 OB. He has since sold it to a German collector............none of the truly knowleable members are still on this site so there is really no way to comment on these pics but at least I have them in the archive. It all looks legit for the first "Baby" being a 1965.

I got an interesting part in for the project today and saw something peculiar. The large nut has three hash marks on it as shown in the photo. I am wondering if this signifies something to do with metal grade or the like. Strange on a nut. I ran across this blurb on strength..........

Fasteners rated at Grade 5 (3 hashes on the head) and grade 8 (6 hashes) generally should not be replaced with Stainless unless you can take the bolt size up a couple sizes.

Non-magnetic (Austenitic 300 series) Stainless steels can be counted on for a tensile strength of about 30KSI. Cold working of the metal during manufacture may get it up to about 90KSI, but that is NOT to be counted on since the bolt buyer has no idea of the heat history of the fastener. Annealing after manufacture, Installation in a hot location or hot forming of the head will bring the strength down to about 30KSI.
A Grade 5 fastener has a minimum tensile strength of 120Ksi
A Grade 8 fastener has a minimum tensile strength of 150Ksi

    http://www.rockcrawler.com/techrepor...ners/index.asp

When dealing with bolt joint design it's often better (cheaper) to go with either fewer high strength fasteners or smaller high strength fasteners, They are a bit more sensitive to bolt torque but installed cost including hole drilling/tapping & joint prep can be as much as 50% below the same strength joint designed using using grade 2 fasteners.

    http://www.nucor-fastener.com/Files/...07_Bolting.pdf

BTW Stainless bolts can come marked with either the alloy designation (302/304/316/321/A286) or 2 hash marks at 12 and 3 o'clock. The screws with 2 hash marks are known as "dairy grade" since they were originally designed to be used in dairy and food processing plants where hot caustic water was used to clean equipment. It has a lot of copper in the stainless to make it easier to manufacture. It also makes them VERY prone to inter-granular corrosion which causes rapid failure if installed under salt water. A286 fasteners are roughly equivalent strength wise to a grade 5 steel bolt, at 7-10X the cost.

gmcars10 was good enough to turn me onto these clips and man are they neat. Got some in today and checking them out. Thanks Ward for the emails! I'm trying to find the actual vendor.

I'm starting to stoke the fire on the project again after some down time on another project. Hinges have been one of those small items that you just can't get done. For the two hatches, I need to have a removable pin and I think I'm down to two possible choices. There were far fewer options then I would have thought when I started. The first pic is very heavy at 3 3/4"x3", and the second pic is smaller and stealth. Not sure which one will be the final choice but need to decide and order 4 of them.

I'm thinking on the hinge choice and did some bad artwork to compare. When I look at the rumble hatches, I am almost tempted to do some type of hidden hinge on the transom storage hatches. That would leave the topsides smooth and not compete with the rumble hatch hardware. Hmmmmmm

I think I may have found the hatch handles. The only issue is how to find out what they cost from Freeman Marine. The have a compression dog latch that will cinch the hatches down and they can be flush mounted. They are a little big though so have to think about that.

I also have been thinking of ways to mount the windscreens. Might use the quick disconnects for this although a bit pricey You could have the pins in front of the windscreens, like pic #1, or behind the screen like pic #2. Noodling it while I watch the Championship.

    Angry Finish It Already !

    Greg~
When do you think your great benchseat eggbeater project will be "Officially" finished ?
    What is your timetable ?
Will it be completed before Labor Day ?

My Mother used to call all of Dad's & My mahogany runabout restoration projects to be~
"Labor Day Specials" because that's usually when they would first hit the water for the Summer season.
Good thing that we always had three or four other finished & running Mahogany classic wooden boat projects to use during the summer season.

Brad, I have no idea when it will be finished. I still have to test the 280 on The Mule and also have other boats. It depends on how many ideas I come up with along the way. My adjustments to the build are kind of like your use of that squiggly line..........prolific!

I can say that it will take longer then a Parnell resto would take, and shorter then your "Benchseat 18" project will take ~~~~~

Ok, now I have the perfect compression latch. I guess the problem is that I won't be able to buy this latch if I don't buy the Shelby I'm going to ask Lakeside if they can get them.

The weekend weather has been lousy so I have been poking around on the little details some more. I got one price on "show" chroming one of the hinge choices of $225 per hinge. Seemed steep but I really don't know the current prices for plating. Here is the hinge pic again. I am getting a second price.

I also dug up a second vendor for fender clips. These in the first pic are smaller then the first set from the US that are in the second pic. I am going to see what the cost is to compare as there might be a use for them.

The 3rd picture is Livorsi's fender clip. The cutout is 5/8" whereas the diameter cutout for the clip in the 2nd pic is a full 1". I don't know the price of Livorsi's. The clip from Italy is a 3/4" cutout.

Now I'm really wondering what the price points are!

I like those clips Greg. Do you know the actual size? They look to be only 1~1.5" diameter.

If I read it right there are two sizes, about 1.14ish inches in stainless, and 1.89ish inches in some other finishes.
