In the interim Clint and team have the pad on the bottom sharp and ready to go. I made this one just a little wider than The Mule for a little more lift instead of extending the strakes. Both inner and outer strakes are in bone stock locations from 1972. I did remove the hook all around as we won't need any help to get on plane. May run a 250 H.O. instead of a 300 Drag.

And then of course I had to find a couple of additional cleat options to consider. The pop up does not require a drain line below deck, it's water tight. The offset has a little different look to it. Hmmmm.

Maybe offset cleats solve some layout or chafing problem in some rare instances, but for a whole bunch of reasons they look like a bad idea to me. The loading on the mount points looks needlessly stressful for one, and the inability for a proper cleat hitch to fit on the cleat itself is another. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VMwXjckgiOs
Did I misunderstand the fender storage plan? Are you talking about losing your drink-holders in favor of fender storage?

Nope, I should still have one coffee cup holder port and starboard in addition to one storage hole for a fender. Bert's Baby front is about the same size as what I'll probably end up with on my eggbeater so I'd like to have the two fenders tucked out of the way up front plus two extra in the back. I also have a gas peddle in the mix on the floor. I doubt I'll have any space under the bench as the 55 gallon belly gas tank is right there.

So, you want to hang four (4) fenders out at the same time? All on one side?

What is the reasoning behind the pad being so long?
And who supplies those L shaped fenders?...Ed
Not sure on the fenders. On the pad in that picture it looks longer than it is. The photo below shows it a bit better at 6' long. The Mule's pad is longer, the result of Aronow and Magoon bantering about. The best I have ever seen with The Mule is 79 mph and not often. I changed the entire bottom design on Surface Tension (including blueprinting) to allow for a much flatter angle of attack up top and softer down low. Overall it should be much faster but will be much more challenging to drive at the edge I suspect. Hopefully it doesn't kill me. Here is the discussion around The Mule. Doc is still hanging in there well into his 80's in Aspen I believe.
"one day i was doing an anesthesia rotation and wound up in bob magoon's (opthamological surgeon) operatory. as we chatted while he placed a new lens we found out that i did the same aerobic class as his wife and his best friend was Don Aronow. it turns out he was an offshore racer in the late 70's with Don. when i told him i had a 74 baby upside down in my garage and i was modifying it he was all excited and that saturday he and don showed up at my house. it was like two big kids arguing over what should be done. unfortunately don was assasinated several weeks later, but bob kept track of my progress over the years"

Did you do the pad first on your 16 and THEN cut in the notch? The keel notch you had doesn't help a wacker with a plate like it does a fixed I/O.

I received my second set of yellow spray out samples from the shop today. It will be sunny here tomorrow so I will do a compare in natural light to the 1972 vinyl. I also got some help from a board member on the West Coast. I sliced down a piece of my yellow sample board on the table saw and dropped it in the mail to him to compare to his sweet Yuma Yellow 1968 16 below. We'll see what he has to say. Thanks Patrick!

I use this thread as an easy way to communicate with the guys at the shop. Saves phone calls and back and forth. To that end, I actually ran across a 16 owner's pic who installed a "different" windshield. I'm still thinking about a removable windscreen with a heavy rake. Finding a swept base U channel in the proper rake is tough. I have several shops who have the machinery to do a "compound" roll if I can find the right channel. It's both a crown and a bend. Some of the 22's seem to have a slightly bent glass windshield. My guy in South Carolina is the man when it comes to bent glass. Maybe an add on mini project after the hull is sprayed and flipped right side up. Either that or a reason to never finish the project.

Yes the pad then we cut in the notch (step)
Think I will leave the 16 the way I got it from Bill
With the exception of adding power steering and the E lower..Ed
