Just a note in case any one has the idea of turning my thermostat down (George) or setting off the alarm,

yeah, but I see we can still upload files remotely. You're going to have a hard time explaining all that gay porn I just sent to 'ol Bugs....

'but honey, I don't know how that got there! must have been the guys on the registry, honest!'

Too funny. Well if it gets out of control, I guess I'll make the account read only.

Hymmm, My last update went poof....

I'll re-write my final review and include the newest things like the Asus quiet (all heat sink) professional graphics card. This things a monster but has to be replaced since the video output is bad through S-Video and component out through DVI-I. You would expect more from a VERY high dollar device.

Also, I should have the new media changer next week that holds 200 DVD's or CD's and two drives. It will allow 2 different DVD's or CD's to be played at the same time from the server. These things are hard to find and pricey. I plan on pimping it out with this. Some other people might find it useful. The case on the PowerFile media changer is clear to show off the internals and I plan on painting it black to match everything else. The new front panel will have some sort of logo to match the name of the device (TBD) and will be anodized black.

The house gets another wiring job (yeah) to pull more CAT 6 for a 1394 network. It turns out 1394 is designed for video networks and has many advantages over ethernet such as no dropped packets. I could piggy back the 1394 over ethernet but I would prefer a separate network for dedicated bandwidth. Sometimes it sucks deciding between the easy and the right way.

On hold items due to monstrous Dental bills are:

Satellite boxes. This does not bother me and maybe the box I really want will come available in US markets at the time I'm ready to resume.

Sony DVP-CX777ES - A 400 Disk media changer for the 1394 network bringing the total capacity to 600 disks or around 90 TB.

    More to come.

Da Taz<---Can you say graphics card with 2560x1600 DPI HD resolution? Sure I knew you could.

If I was still back in collage and working on PC's, I'd be drooling right now.

I might be anyway. Just a little.

BTW, I didn't re-read the whole thread, but did you ever talk about the audio side? 'in the day' that was what I was more into. Now I don't bother with anything as I'm not home enough to make use of it.

I think I might have glossed over that a bit.

The Intel P45 chip is really cool. It has the 8 channel THX (front, side, rear, center, sub) sound with effects. The effects are the typical: bathroom, Carnegie Hall etc and you can design your own. Japanese living room is interesting. As usual all channels are configurable for tone, volume, etc.

My current amp setup is 5.1 + sub so I'm trying to find a vintage Carver TFM 25, 35 or 45 amp to go with the system and bring it to 8 channel. Then crawl through the attic some more to mount side speakers. All outputs are 1/8 mini plugs which looks weird next to a stack of Audiophile premium interconnects.

I plan on bypassing the Carver pre-amp/Audio Control EQ and going direct to the amps from the server and use the server sound controls. This is mainly because the Carver is Dolby Digital and the server is THX. So I get the best of both worlds.

Hope that answers some of the questions. AND as far the "back in college" remark...You can always go back and then you can justify the drool.
