    best protection for your puter???

lots of anti-virus, spy ware, yadda yadda yadda...
i used McAfee, now using Norton, Spybot, and i still get invaded.
I've heard (from the wife, who used a Mac) that Grisoft's Avg is probably the best, and its free.

Common all you 'puter pros, if you were gonna set up a good friends puter for the first time, and protect it the best way you know how:
which anti virus program would you use?
    which spyware would you use?
anything else you would use in addition to those two??
as always thanks for the help in advance, cheers

I used to install the Norton stuff on my customers' computers. Good stuff if they keep it updated. Problems is, people are cheap and don't spend the 20-40 bucks a year to buy an annual contract, new disk, etc.

So I have found 2 free ones that work well.

    Antivirus
    www.avast.com
    download it here
    http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

    Addware/Spyware
    Lavasoft Ad Aware SE Personal
    download it here
    http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Again, both are free and do automatic updates which are also free.

You will never permantantly get rid of the addware and spyware. When yo sure the net, stuff gets addded to your hard drive. Even sites like CNN, USAToday, MSNBC install this stuff on your computer. Why do you think the online versions of these newspapers are free? Cause the put add stuff on your computer in hopes that you will buy something someday!!!!

    Another option...

Comcast also does provide McAfee's Security Center for free. Provides Virus Scan, FW & Privicy Services. The personal FW services advise, update and trace folks doing all kinds of nastys like port scans and illegal installs.

The service is open to any current comcast broadband customer.

Software changes along with the times. What was good several years ago isn't always so great nowadays.

For antivirus, NOD32 and Kaspersky are top notch! NOD32 usually has multiple updates per day.

For spyware, Spyware Doctor is the best ranked one at the moment

Grisoft AVG is great! Using it for about four months now, no problems. I don't even have to run Spybot anymore. AVG seems to kill spyware also. It sets up some background tasks that are noticable on my antique machine, but it does keep a clean house......... AND its free......

We changed to SBCglobal.net which is now AT&T and we got the security suit with it and it works pretty well.
One note though: Not any one software catches everything. AND when you suspect problems start scanning and find out what it is. Highjackthis is great for catching the stuff others miss but use it with knowledge.
