Big time 'puter problems.

My 'puter totally crashed today. I had to reprogram it with the "recovery CD". Everything is gone. Pics, files email info, everything.And the Donzi Registry looks like **** now. The pics aren't coming up; just #s to click on. And the pages move jerky. There used to be a way to change the Registry display format but I can't find it now. Also my display is 1" off center now. I've been working on this for hours and finally got back on line. I could really use some help getting things back to normal. Thanks.

JR[/QUOTE]It's not too late and I appreciate the help. When I turned on the puter this morning I once again had to reinstall everything; A 39 minute process. Now the screen is centered and my "favorites" were still listed but the Registry still looks like crap. I checked applications running like you said and the only one was this thread. Everything else is wiped clean. I guess I'll just keep messing with it. Edit: The pics are now coming up as thumbnails again but the page jerks while scrolling instead of moving smoothly like it used to.

I tried all the different mouse settings as you suggested but no improvement. If I use the scroll bar or mouse wheel the image moves jerky. It used to move smooth so that you could read the page while scrolling. This all started last week while I was surfing and started getting security warnings saying my computer was infected and getting pop-ups from spy-ware removers trying to sell me their services. Then Monday afternoon it would not boot up. It's working now after reprogramming but still isn't right. Of course my files and pics are gone for good but today when I turned it on my new list of "favorites" was gone and I had to relog on to my websites.

Just as a warning to you guys, I did indeed visit some links to some "adult" websites when this happened . Today the computer booted up OK and my files were in place. Now I just need to work out the remaining bugs; jerky scrolling, no audio, etc. I don't think I'll need to hire a pro, just help from friends and my copy of "Windows XP For Dummies."

Rootsy, I'll look into your suggestions. Right now I am probably 100% unprotected. My firewall is probably down. I'll only go to trusted regular sites until I get back to normal. I'm not worried about the 'puter police; trust me, I'm not into child porn or any other perverted illegal stuff! Who hasn't checked out some T&A on the web? No more for me though and no one else will use this computer. The one good thing about this is that I am starting out with a clean slate.

I am in IT and this is the antivirus software I run on all my pc's it loads faster and catches many more viruses that norton or mcafee and its free and so are the updates. AVG free edition antivirus

Things are getting back to normal. I had to reinstall my sound card with a separate CD ROM. After some automatic updates from microsoft my jerky scrolling problem is gone Now I have to decide on an anti-virus program to run. Thanks again for the help. This 'puter has proven to have amazing self healing capabilities.

I installed mikev's free anti-virus program and my 'puter now says that it is clean and that I have up to date anti-virus protection!

OK, after a total 'puter meltdown I am slowly getting back to normal but I still have one big problem. My e-mail is not working. I get an error box that I have entered the wrong server name (POP3). This one is driving me crazy and I need to fix it now! Any suggestions??

It should be pop.mail.server.com/net (or whatever) Replace "server" with the name of your provider. Also make sure that your sending mail options are set if the program you are using has them.

Thanks, I will play with this more tonight. I just got it to where I can read my emails but I still cannot send them. Anyway, gotta head to work now.

Carl, you have to KNOW what your mail servers are called. Your ISP provides this. Usually the incoming mail server is a POP, Post office protocal server. You out going server is usually a smtp protocal server.
They could be called different names.
Example:
In mail server: pop.ispname.com
Out mail server : mx.ispname.com
The path is always.
Preferences - accounts - edit.

If you can't send out you'll have to authenticate the Smtp server.
This just means you re-enter you name and password under the advanced menu. Don't check SSL.

I reinstalled my SBC Yahoo! DSL CD and made sure that my email server info is correct. I can still read emails but not send them. At least I got to read my last months worth of mail. Some people are going to think I was rude not responding. I will call the SBC support center tomorrow and I think they will have to do something from their end. I had to wipe the 'puter clean and reinstall everything. A lot of things are different now and this has really been a learning experience. At least I was able to save the 'puter!
