    OK smartasses......part 2...... extra credit for ya's....

OK here is a good one for you to try out......

This is a gearbox with 3 gears in it. Gear 1 has 25 teeth, gear 2 has 20 teeth and the third has 30 teeth. The box is 250 mm deep (meaning front to back, not top to bottom). Also there is 10 mm of spacing between the gears and each end of the box. Using the information in the drawing how many quarts of oil will be required to obtain a depth of 50 mm with the gears removed (ie not displacing any oil)? The drawing is not to scale.

    Good luck.

The reasion I asked for quarts is because you have to run down to Pep boys to get your earl and it's all in quarts...... ...basically to make it a pain in the ass.

This is just like the time Thomas Edison gave a glass globe for a light bulb to one of his workers and asked him to calculate it's volume. Edison came back about an hour later and found the worker with pages of measurments and calculations trying to determine the volume of the spheriod part, the taper of the cylinder part, the radius at the interface of the taper and sphere. Edison snatched the globe out of the workers hand and filled it with water. He then poured the water into a graduated beaker and read off the volume.

Answer to your problem....fill the gearbox to the required depth....pour out the oil and measure the volume.

Always go with the simple solution.....
