    Spam and what ever!

There has been an increase in spam to the point of 1 in 10 or more is keeper mail. I was hoping SP2 would have helped a bit but NG, maybe we are doomed to spend 15-20 minutes deleting the crap. Any ideas on avoiding atleast some of it.

In Philly we get scrapple not spam...

    Phil,

Three things that work for me:

    1. If your mail server has anti SPAM settings like "spam assasin" - a program that filters out known SPAMers similar to anti virus software. Or your server may have some white list / black list filtering ruls where you can, for example, send all email with the word "viagra" to a junk folder.

    2. Microsoft outlook and outlook express have some SPAM filtering options.

    3. I bought a program called "spam butcher" online, $29 I think. There are others also available. It works like #1 above and removes "known SPAMers".

I use all three and have cut my SPAM by 90%.

Here's a good free program for outlook. It works best with Exchange, but can also be set up to work with POP3.

Phil, I use two email accounts. 1 for regestering programs, websites etc and 1 for my REAL stuff, works and friends etc.
This has been the best way to prevent spam from getting to the real stuff I need.
Other than that, contact your ISP for filtering software.

The spam filter available for Netscape 7.2 is pretty good once it gets going. And its free. The comment lines are fun to read.
You can then automatically route spam to the trash, and from trash they will be deleted automatically after a set time period. I usually hold the spam for a while in the junk file and check now and then for good messages that got labled as spam or someone not yet in my address list.
I was recently gone for 12 days. 360+ junk messages, two good ones that made it to inbox, and one, Sorry Lenny!, that got miss- read as spam.
But I still have to recieve all of them from my mail server, and that is a pain waiting for all the junk to get done transfering on dial up just so that it will get tagged and trashed. I don't have to look or otherwise deal with any of them. I also have my mail password locked just in case nephews are about.
I made the mistake a few years ago of using my personal e-mail address for an on line dating service. Due to the content its an educated guess that 99 % of the spam was due to this. Every Year I get Happy Birthday messages on the wrong date that I entered.
What a wonderful technology being screwed up by jerks.
