    Post helmut

The guy working on my 270 tells me that I need a new helmut to fix the rest of the slop. He says not to get a used one because it will have the same problem. Any suggestions?

I agree...Helmut is German for helmet.. the rotating cover that connects the steering mechanism to the outdrive with, in many instances, a single bolt. I would not take the chance of using a USED part when I am going 60+ down across the water.

    Emmo--

    I had similar problem.
If helmit is not damaged, then it's the bushings.
    Volvo Replacements are not satisfactory.
I went to a machine shop with the parts and they machined new bushings out of high temp durable polymer used for this application.
It eliminated 99+% of all slop.
Only play left is in the cable streach.
It was better as it used original parts, gave a great result, it was easy and it cost very little (even with a second set of bushings made for future use, if necessary).
