Not fully familiar with the OMC technologoy, but could there be a shift interupter switch going bad? I know Merc outdrives utilize a switch to mometarily cut-out the engine during the shift process.
Merc 383Mag Stroker. Strong 350HP pushes my Cig 20 just fine.
