Scott, your boat, I was interested in way back. thank god it got to a good, place. I'd have bought this, but things didn't work out with the check out at the time.

I am glad it will get full treament.. I mean that. I think this boat found the best home.......... :)

SC is a magnum. The donzi stuff was all just for teleflex and ads.

You saw SC pre restore? Oky, who are you? We have followed it from 1974 - and still follow it. we found the hull when it was hidden from view cause of the title problem. We have banged on the doors, uninvited asking about the boat. we have made bids on it . We've left cards at the front door many times. They know we want this boat. We just don't want it at 120K. :)

I love my Hornet, (two seat) but the bench seat lines are just the ultimate! All right Mr. Great Pumpkin, let's get this bench seat stern drive in your garage now! I think that it would be a nice addition to your V-drive Hornet.
BTW, that would surely make a Happy New Year!

In my opinion the coolest Donzi ever made was a 1995 22 Classic with a teal stripe and hull. This boat has the 502/Blackhawk combination, K-Planes and is an 80 mph sleeper. But, that is just my unbiased opinion. wink

Spitfire 24
Criterion 3? The one with the closed deck

We just don't want it at 120K. :) My parents were in the market for a boat sometime around 1975-76 and we went to a marina in Maryland. The dealer showed us a red Maltese Magnum 28' and in the yard was this pathetic looking boat that was pale yellow in color with Magnum Marine and Donzi emblems on it. It still had "Satan's Chariot" on the sides and the dealer told us that it was pretty rare. None of us had any idea what we were looking at and it needed too much work for us to even consider it since my Dad wasn't very handy and I was only 16 at the time.
Anyway, the only time I've seen anything about it is on this site and the information is very interesting. I'd love to learn more about this very unusual boat; how many were made like this?

Mr. Magoo - I'd be interested in the Spitfire you mentioned. Especially if it is blue and white like the one in Danny's post. I wouldn't even care if it didn't have a cudy under the front deck. That Donzi looks fast sitting still and would be a great boat for me to run on Lake Erie. I would love to see some pics of it, but if Danny is interested, he has first dibbs! I wouldn't buy out a board member....

What is the coolest Donzi is a matter of taste. I love all of them for different reasons. The 22' Testarrosa has always been one my favorites, stunning red head, just like it's name sakes from Italy. The X-18, the name alone says it all. The Minx, clean lines, sexy windshield, Donzi should bring this boat back. The 18s from the earliest V drive barrel backs to the most recent Classics sleek low, cool. And finally the little Sweet 16s and the Hornets, the boats that started it all. Did I mention 007 the the boat that defined offshore power boat racing for the last 4 decades, and finally the 38ZR, it's worthy successor. Most importantly I think my boat is cool, I enjoy driving it, looking at it and talking about it, as much now, as the first time I saw it. I'm sure all of you feel the same way about your own rides.

MR MAGOO

The Spitfire does not have a cuddy and when you check it out under the deck it`s pretty interesting. As far as I can tell the Spritfire was an El Pescadore open fisherman with a bow cover insert/dash panel installed, and it fits perfectly just inside the gunnel(if it was a fisherman) Under the deck there is nonskid on the floor.

This boat was running last season, goes really well with the current power, although one motor is out for a rebuild and the boat could stand a nice rehash. The transom has been redone and now has Alpha SS drive with Land and Sea Stern Jacks. She runs around 75 on GPS.

Dan and others,

------The story of the DONZI 24 line as I know it.
------Roy Farmer,General manager of DONZI for years, loved fishing down in the Keys.In the early 70s there really wasnt a hull conducive to conversion to a center console that DONZI was building.Roy felt that the St.Tropez was too small for what he wanted and anyone could see the trend to longer boats.Im sure that over a few lunches with the boss,John Chisholm,a plan was hatched to do a whole line of 24s,with the El Pescador as the starting point.I was around for some of those early lunches when Roy would tell us he wanted a bigger center cosole boat for his excursions.
------Im not sure when Harry Schell, the designer, got drawn into the plans but he designed the the 4-boat package that became the 24ft. line.
--------1.El Pescador
--------2.Spitfire
--------3.Doral
--------4.Spirit
------It really was an inspired plan.Harry designed an absolutely killer hull(ask anyone who rode in my El Pescador at Sarasota),but I think the deck design was truly revolutionary. All 24s were built with the El Pescador inner hull. There was an indented lip all the way around the circumference of the inner deck. That indented lip accepted the other three design deck caps.
------Had production really got cranked up it would have allowed the factory to build spec hulls to a more finished degree.Ordered boats could have been built faster.
------I dont know why the sales plans didnt work out.DONZI may have priced them selves too high.I cant remember, but maybe there was a market downturn around then.Maybe Brownie would have some input on this subject. His knowledge of this stuff is so deep.In any event the 24 line was sold to Sonic sometime in the late 70s.I have a friend from Ft.Lauderdale who bought the first 24 Sonic SS (Spitfire) out of the (now) Sonic molds. It unfortunatly got destroyed.I dont know how many other SSs were built.I also dont know if Sonic ever built any of the other deck plans. In any event, the 24 is no longer built by anybody and it is truly a shame.I havent talked to anyone from Sonic but was told by my friend that the hull mold(at least)exists.Who knows what shape its in though.
------We need someone with deep pockets to step up and start up a company to build these boats.Ill help!Truly a big water boat if need be,and yet easily trailerable.Something me,and alot of us on this board value highly.Got to get to all these great DONZI shows with a minimum of fuss, yah know!Hope this has helped.............Bill S......ol red!

Scott,
I was replying yesterday when the thread was killed.
I got my X-18 two years ago in St. Augustine.
All original but new 350 crate motor and new interior.
All the details are there, Morse control, hydraulic steering,
engine flush hook-up, no tabs.
New gas tank last year, rebuilt the 270 drive this year.
Busted the unsealed stringers in October,
engine out and rebuilding for spring.
I didn’t even know it was an X-18 till I visited this site ‘bout 300 times.
Leave out details?
Scott what is the Statesman interior, was it an option? http://www.donzi.net/photos/Gabeler33.jpg http://www.donzi.net/photos/Gabeler333.jpg

The coolist Donzi ever,.... MY X-18

In all seriousness, the X-18 is my favorite, I think the 18 in general is the "drivers" boat, you can do lots with the power and drive. The classic hull, etc. BUT, also, the 18 had enough variations too keep it interesting, sharp V Barrelback, Rounded V, X-18, modern, with windshield, without, etc. etc. Big block, small block, V-Drive, TRS, Volvo, Merc Alpha, Bravo,.... etc. etc.

I'm also VERY partial to the Dorals, especially with twins, if I ever found the right one, I'd be all over it - Divorce pending and all

Are all Donzi's cool, hell yeah! But, me, my favorite is MY Donzi!!
