Why would you want to go back to a volvo? The merc cut out is now standard even the new Volvo drives use it. Go to the lake george donzi classic club website www.lgdonziclassic.com go to the resources page under tech manuals we have a full size PDF. With the template and the x dimesion table

Try this
Www.lgdonziclassic.com/pdfs/280template.pdf
The only reason I am going with volvo is because I have a 280 ready to go.
I can and know how to work on Volvo's (not that I can't learn how to work on a Merc)
I would be fine with a Merc, I just don't have a budget for a Bravo
The boat is a Formula Jr with straight 6 Merc and a pre Alpha Merc Drive
Going in is a Ford 302 and currently a Volvo 280
Thx for the links and template Matt BTW
I am all ears if you all think I should go with something else

They made a merc 888 drive which used ford 302 power that was pre alpha may be an option would keep it era period correct not sure on availability but could be an easier resto

You may even already have the 6 cyl version of the 888
This is what is on there.

Man that's an old one. Look at the two different trim rams. Crazy. Not sure where you are at but I have some left over Merc transom shield parts from my project. If you are going small block a 888 or a 898 would work fine.
I am located at Lake Tahoe
I get that a Merc 888 or 898 would be period correct, but is it outdated and parts hard to find?
Yeah, what was on there is some old stuff.

If part availability is a concern the aq stuff is starting to be hard to find too

Especially for ford stuff
Very good point as well.
I have about 3 complete volvo 270/280 sitting there, so I do have backup parts.
How reliable are alphas? Is the transom mounting the same as what I have?
Would that be a good decision?

Left hand helm? The JR is more like a barrelback 18 sharp keel so they tend to fall off to one side a bit there are two sharp keel 18 that are left hand helm and right. Hand Merc drives each ride ok but need a bit of tab and trim to get there don't know if you have considered that
Since I was going with Volvo, I never considered the RH LH helm position as Volvo can do either the same.
Because I have the Volvo sitting right there, I will prob go that route unless I get handed a Merc.
Only slightly worried about cutting the transom as I am sure the cut needs to be pretty perfect as to not install off angle to any degree

Actually for the Volvo it is not as sensitive as the merc. For alignment

I'm using a 351W with a Merc Alpha for my Formula Jr.
I have a spare bell housing that'll work with a SBF/Alpha set up, if you want to stay Merc.
