All of us out here 1000 miles away in our own hurricane alley are just horrified watching this play out . Thanks to satellite and cable tv we're getting all the same coverage that you in the US are and the images coming in from the islands to our south is just mind blowing .
I'm guessing that a lot of Florida's home construction is similar to that of St Maarten and Tortola and what you see in those places is just awful . And that's not even taking into account that Florida has a lot more to worry about with storm surge than those islands did .

Our thoughts are with everyone that has been and will be in Irma's path . This is another one that is going to take a very long time to get over .

And now we've got Jose bobbing around doing loop de loops under us in a few day's time , and then another one behind him !
Last year we had Nicole a strong cat 3 do a direct hit and the year before it was 2 direct hits in 6 days .

Global weather pattern change ... naah , can't be such a thing , surely . :boggled:

Hurricane Andrew decimated Homestead in August of '92 and over the next year the building codes were
completely overhauled. Homes built starting in '94 had the roof structure tied securely to the concrete
foundation. Our house was built to these codes, actually in '94. The shingles may come off at 130 MPH
winds, or so, but the roof is good for considerably higher than that. Florida is said to have the toughest
building codes in the country, but that doesn't help older homes, or mobile homes. A good friend just
left his house near Key West. It was built in the early '70's and is only about 3' above sea level. In other
words, it's virtually uninsurable. So he's not expecting to return to much n ext week. I hope FEMA will be
able to help him.

Good luck to everyone down there. Thankfully, she's a lot weaker than when she was tearing up the Antilles. Hoping for the best.

Had to get my kid out from the University of Tampa and a cousin out of Port Charlotte. Airlines should be ashamed of themselves.

Also, hope the looters get strung up by their B@##$!

Don't worry about Jose. It won't hit the US. Trump won't let it in.

Be Safe everyone.

After a week of preparing and then clean-up I'm back in the office. We were very fortunate in Tampa as the storm made a last minute jog to the east. I woke up at 1:50AM on Monday morning after going to bed around 11:00. I got a little sleep thanks to a few glasses from the Cazadores bottle in the kitchen. It was pretty calm as the edge of the eye was passing over Tampa. Monday morning was still very windy but we got outside to survey the damage. Our house was built in 1964 and is all block construction. The roof was replace 3 years ago to modern codes and our garage addition was finished a couple of weeks ago so the Classic was inside next to the 911. We literally had no damage! Lots of branches down and power was out for a day and a half but with a generator we got through better than some others. I have friends that are still without power and water. Today we are helping to get supplies together for people in S. FL. and the Keys. Water, canned food, etc. What was most amazing is how the community came together after the storm to help each other out.

We dodged a bullet and are very grateful. I hope the others here in FL made out OK.

Just got back from a two week "vacation" in Miami. They got real lucky. They didn't get a direct hit and thankfully so. This time it was flooding and trees that caused all the damage. The buildings and structures were fine. Hardest hit was south Coral Gables and Pinecrest where the foliage has run amuck. My understanding is that it's very difficult to remove trees and foliage even on your own property. Everyone there paid the price with one to two week outages. Little did I know, due to being to busy, is that I was working all around Scott Baxter's neighborhood. I didn't realize until two days ago and never got to see him. He had cold beer, too.

Just about everything there is up and running, now.

Naples area got hit the hardest. John "Smokediver" lives there. He faired well but the area, not so much.

I am now going to catch up on some sleep. LOL
