View Full Version : Is this a knock off pump?

I mentioned in my other thread that I bought a replacement water pump. I opened it up and it is in great shape, but when I opened my old pump, for comparison, I am thinking I may have bought a knock off. Both impeller covers say "Indmar" and have the same markings, but there are 3 things that make me think it my be a knock off:
1) The replacement uses an insert to create an "oval" bore.
2) The machining on the end of the shaft (of the replacement) is much rougher.
3) No pic, but my original impeller says Johnson on it, and has a part number. The replacement has nothing.

I'm using it regardless. I'm just curious if the replacement is "normal".

I have two of the Johnson pumps and neither have an insert.
My shaft ends are the same, but the cast steel flanges are
machined differently and required me to modify the front pulley
for mounting.

Jabsco uses the insert...

The Sherwood pump in my Donzi and the two Pleasurecraft pumps in my cruiser all use the insert. It's a lot easier (cheaper) to machine a round hole and add a piece than to machine the final shape needed for the inside of the housing.

I thought it might be a knock off for the exact reason Penbroke said. "It's a lot easier (cheaper) to machine a round hole and add a piece..."
Seems it's relatively common though.
Thanks for the feedback.
