Hello all.
I just purchased a very early 22 Classic. (so stoked)
It comes with a 454 plus a TRS drive which neither are installed in the boat.

What are my options here as I will need to rebuild the 454 and I do not know the running condition of the TRS
Is it worth keeping?
Those TRS' I believe add a couple hundred lbs.
Is there an easy Drive swap?
I assume I will need to move the engine back if I was to go with a regular outdrive.

Thanks all for your input as it is well appreciated

Moving the weight forward in these boats negatively effects handling and top speed. Lose the TRS and put the engine back where it belongs and install a Bravo drive. Preferably an XR upper/Imco -2" lower.

Moving the weight forward in these boats negatively effects handling and top speed. . that's actually farrrr from true. Several TRS setups have been over 80 and at least 1 about 95ish... if you go to a Bravo drive it will require filling and glassing the transom, and a new cutout. If you plan on staying under 80, there is no reason not to use what you have if it's a budget or originality issue. Personally, I love them, other opinions may differ. One thing is for sure, you won't break it.

It was originally a 454 with TRS
I have heard good things about them when they are properly running. However, I don't know the working conditions of what is there now.
Is it easy to figure that out?
The engine is in pieces and the drive is as well. Not sure exactly what the drive looks like yet as I have not yet grabbed it. It is in storage.
I am trying to line up my options before spring.

In high altitude, 80 MPh will be very hard with a 454.
My buddys 22 with 502 did 80MPH as well as his Shelby 22 with 496.
I would like to do 60+ but do not need to go over 70.

Thanks for the help all

I have no experience with a single trs in a small boat but I did have twin trs in and old Cig. They are beasts and reliable but parts are becoming harder to come by. I'd sell the trs and transmission and buy a good used bravo set up. Having the transom glassed over and recut is not that bad. I was quoted 1k.

Go with the proven formula. These boats already like a lot of trim to fly the bow. Keep the weight in the rear. I even put an anchor box in my engine room. A Bravo is plenty strong with a mild 454. Has the back seat been modified to move the engine forward? Boat should run like this, not like the white boat which I'm about to pass :):

Carl, I've been putting my anchor under the rear seat and it's a PITA to get it out when I need it. My plan was to buy a smaller anchor to keep up in the bow or floor...

Stan Pike might have an unused Konrad available. He had a new one and didn't use it.

My boat is perfectly balanced and the engine is 18 inches forward .. I can have a coke at 103 mph . It depends on how your bottom is, as most 22' have a bad hook . I thought mine was perfect until they spent over 100 hours taking the hook and defects out . Lenny I'm saving it for your 18 Lenco !!!!

Thanks. It's not the fastest 22 but I boat on the Great Lakes and reliable 80s are just what I needed. The 525 is a great match for the 22. If you're running on the last two fet of hull who needs steps ;).
