View Full Version : Pre AOTH Debacle

I noticed the drive train slipping the last 2 times I had the TR out.
On Monday I removed the drive and had it checked. I was told it
was OK. That left the prop hub and the Bravo coupler.
The prop hub was welded, so that wasn't an issue, which left the
coupler. The boat still has less than 10 hours on the drive train.
So Friday I took everything loose and drained the closed cooling
system. Saturday, we (Rick Bagwell, a Criterion owner was helping)
pulled the engine and changed the coupler. We also took the
opportunity to change the oil and filter, and new coolant.
Also, I liked the first crank driven pump I used. I inadvertently
blew the seal out of it by pressurizing the raw water system by
closing the transom pickup and turning on the hose (I do have a
relief valve). Anyway, I installed a new seal in the first pump and
re-installed the pump.
The most frustrating thing is there's no evidence of failure in the
coupler, see picture. There was no odor, no juddering, and all you
see in the picture is grease across the front face.
Any comments, or insights?

Maybe I'll re-shoot the coupler picture. My hands aren't
as steady as they were. So today we got the engine back
in, fluids in and ready for the drive to go on. The
frustrating thing is the calendar and we're leaving Wednesday
for Kentucky.
Here's a couple more pictures from yesterday.

why the welded prop hub?

you need some give-or-take somewhere along the line..

If the coupler was slipping, there'd be smoke and crap everywhere. I'd be double checking the drive clutches.

I can't remember--is the drive a Bravo1? B1X? B1XR?

George,

When my coupler went south, it looked like yours with no sign of burnt rubber nor smell. So, it is conceivable that it went. As far as a cause, the only thing I can think of is the alignment was off somewhat.

I suppose that's a good question. I bought the prop from a member here
and that's the way it was built (Hydro Q4).

Mike, it's a Bravo I. In fact it's a bit of an antique, the 1st year of production (summer of '87).

Bob, that seems to be it. I checked it today and found it to be a very small change.
Mostly it was a small difference in height from one side to the other.
I was able to get a much better pattern and it was much easier to insert
the tool.

So, the engine is in, the engine/gimbal bearing aligned, new oil and filter, new coolant,
should be able to run it tomorrow.

George,
I was glad to read that you are going to AOTH this year with your completely restored 22, and I hope it gets the respect it deserves. FWIW, when the coupler hub in my 28' Warlock let go at top RPMs due to a misalignment of the engine, there was quite a bit of telltale smoke. When I changed it, I was surprised that it did not really show much in the way of an appearance of damage like rubber parts hanging out. I hope you enjoy the gathering. Bill

It should be made clear (once and for all) that there's NO definitive way a coupler lets go when it fails .
The repeated stories of 'you can always tell by the smoke and smell of burnt rubber and bits of stuff flying around' do not hold true in all cases and just serve to mislead others with less experience.

When mine let go it was the splines that vanished . No smoke , no burnt rubber smell , no bits of stuff everywhere .

Out of curiosity George , was that a new coupler or a used one ? I find it strange that one with such low hours on it would fail like that .

Steve, it was a big surprise to me. It would hold up to about 2000-2500 RPM before slipping.
Splines were fine, and no visible damage to the rubber.
I can accept that perhaps I didn't align as well as was possible, but I had removed and reinstalled several
times during building w/o any real effort.
FWIW, it performed well at AOTH, and I'm planning on removing the drive again and recheck the alignment.

Nice job getting the last minute repair done. Really glad she ran well.

Is the motor broken in yet? How's the performance treating you? I'm a fan of the big-cubes approach.

Engine now has 11 hours and it's time to find out what it can do.
I know I need some help tuning it.
Buizilla sent me the address of a carb company that'll
help in that area.
I'll just say there's room for improvement.

I just removed the drive again to verify the alignment.
Taking my time over the holiday weekend to re-do the
alignment and to finish some wiring issues.

I worked on the alignment today and now I can move the alignment tool in and out of the coupler w/just two fingers.
I'm pleased.

I hope not all the wiring issues are my wiring.
If it is my wiring, give me a week or two to come up with some sort of lame excuse
I think it may be the ground from the panel to the battery..Ed

I think some of the wiring issues may be related to R&R the engine so quickly.
I just need time to check everything out.
The blower, compressor, and bilge pump aren't working. They were before.
And on the dash, when you flip a switch, all the switch lights come on dimly....
usually that indicates a poor ground somewhere.
I've got a 3 day weekend to figure it out.

Ha!
I licked it!
I should have figured this out earlier. As I mentioned, the blower, bilge pump,
and compressor are all wired and grounded in the same area of the STBD
transom. I was in the bilge this morning tightening the front engine mount nuts
and jam nuts, and saw a #10 black wire w/o an end on it!!! I have no extra wires
anywhere so I figured it must be the ground wire from the ground bus on the
transom. I suppose I didn't remove it from the engine ground stud when I
pulled the engine. I put a new end on the wire and connected it to one of the
ground studs on the top/rear of the engine/flywheel cover.
Now, everything works!
