I modified the holder/charger so that the radio locks into it with the belt clip. Wired it so that it charges while the boat is running. Now I have the advantages of a fixed VHF and handheld in one. Ready for the big water as soon as temps get to the 80s. Hitting the local lake today.

How did you attach holder to dash?

I hate to drill holes in my boat but it is held with two nuts and screws. Nothing else would have held up on the Great Lakes.

I've never had a VHF on the boat because I always boat in areas that are relatively close to shore and thought it wasn't necessary...and it's not a Coast Guard requirement. I'm realizing how foolish that thinking really is. Even a few hundred feet from shore is a loooong way from safety when something drastic happens and the boat is going down. It's not just about my safety and those with me, though. In all my years of boating, it is entirely possible that I could have helped someone else in trouble, but didn't, because I wasn't able to hear their call. Handhelds are quite affordable and it's now on the shopping list. I'm hoping it'll be one of those purchases that never gets used.

It's been a while but here was my post from several years ago on the VHF topic.
