A good choice for your Minx, but for your 18,
you'd need 25"-27" pitch.

As I posted earlier, my 18 OD is a SS and powered with a SBC Dart 406. Didn't have it dyno'd and probably running same HP as you. I chose a 25p and not more to avoid stressing od. I run mine very close to 6k, not sustained.

I think Hydro made that prop for outboards. Years ago, I followed Rootsy post and I believe he ran an OT on his 16. There was a video of him running with another D at speeds N. of 70

An Alpha has no "give" in its drive components, so there needs to be something to let go in case of a grounding, or whatever. A hub is cheaper than gears and shafts.
A Bravo has a cone clutch that can slip a bit under the same circumstances.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the rare "SS" version of the Mercury Alpha lower unit give you a prop shaft centerline that is closer to the keel's bottom than a stock Alpha or Bravo drive does? I can never remember if it's 2" or 2 1/2" higher.

The SS lower is 2" shorter than a Alpha. The upper of the SS is 1" shorter than a Alpha. Overall The SS is 3' shorter than a Alpha. These facts were taken from Rootsy post years ago when he was an active member. He sure was a valued member.

After swapping drive to a SS, speed increased 6mph. gps. Handling (feel) was much improved.

Gotcha, 3" overall. I would bet that if you tried a Precision Propeller Turbo Fusion 4 prop you would find it as good or better than a Q-IV on that higher drive.

Mr. Carter, you are correct with one exception. If you have a high amount of non-stock horsepower behind the drive you can accomplish the same thing by using the CORRECT flo-torque insert. There are a variety of inserts but if your goal is to have the insert take the impact, the Flo-Torq II model which has the softest insert is the way to go. I would think with spirited use, a rubber hub would spin far earlier than the FT II. You just have to be sure that you are getting the proper kit/part # as there are many options within the Merc Flo-Torq line-up.
