Warm up impeller first in hot water and keep everything lubed with antifreeze as you work. Push impeller in while you loosen hose clamp. Use any tool that will work to turn impeller as you remove old one and fully seat new one:

Great idea Carl.
I just did mine the old fashion way...Vaseline and elbow grease. :nilly::boggled::bonk::yes:

Will Vaseline break down the rubber? (Pun not intended but I'm going with it.)

Vaseline is safe on rubber. I was a transmission mechanic for 20 years and vaseline is used in the rebuild on all rubber parts because it melts instantly into the trans fluid, no blobs like grease. It's probably fine to use on an impeller but maybe not because there is no oil flowing through there to wash it out. That's why I use antifreeze. This is an easy method I came up with after struggling with these things for years.

You skipped the hardest part..getting the damn thing lined up again and getting the bolts in. It is a nightmare as the shaft is off center and therefore screws up the bolt alignament. The whole process is a nightmare..such a horrible design..
I usually do it under running hot water. Hot water certainly helps..

I upgraded my Jabsco with a run dry impeller. I think I'll do the same with my Alpha:shades:

The mechanics I know all use dish washing liquid .. works for sliding tyres on rims too when nothing else is around .

I often look at a job and rate it in terms of 6 packs or multiples thereof :biggrin.:

I use white lithium grease but never thought about vaseline.

With a crank driven pump, it's about 5X easier.
No 6 packs required.

Come to think of it, I doubt that alcohol is a very good lubricant....

I like the dish soap idea best but antifreeze has worked for me.

I've been avoiding this task.
My impeller is now 3 years old.
Do I need to change it?

Yes! I try to change mine every season but have gone 2 seasons on one.

You can get 5 yrs easy on these. Marketing say fewer, thats all. I got 20yrs/1800hrs on my first Alpha one, it did not failed, just set and lost some flow..

At my marina they have recommended to change after 3 years in fresh and 2 years in salt. I do plan to change mine this year. I changed the impeller in my 75HP Merc outboard last year; not sure how many years it had been because I've owned her for 3. My guess is that it was many more years than 5, the wear plate was shot...

Of course the marina will tell you to change these things all the time but you do not need to. I have never gotten less than 5 yrs, usually more, more like 10 and i have never had one fail and left me stuck.

AS a rather eccentric person I know likes to say .. 'It's in a doctor's best interest that you don't get better ! '
