I'm in the process of (with help from Michael Aronow) trying to get a section of ave. R in Brooklyn renamed to: "Don Aronow way"
Brooklyn Community board 15 in SheepsHead Bay is where it all starts (application questionnaire) before it ends up at the Brooklyn
boro president's desk for final OK....................by the way, Don Aronow was born and raised in "SHB" Brooklyn on ave. R

I had no idea Don was a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy. I graduated in 1989. I don't think there is any mention of him in Academy history.

Greg......Billy Frenz did get me intouch with Michael Aronow .......so thanks for that!....He's been sending me alot of history.

Matty......While Don A. was lifeguard in Coney Isl. he recorded alot of saves.....Hollywood thought about a "Tarzan" role for him.

I'm glad Billy worked that out for you. It will be a nice accolade all these years later to see a street named after Mike's Dad. Happy to see if moving along and nice job by you with your knowledge of the local folks there. Brings back a lot of memories for me when I went there to get my 16.

Wonder what hat outboard motor shop he worked at and if it's still there.

It was well before my time but from what I have read that area and into Long Island was a hot bed of Outboard activity. Strong Island still is to this day Bert. I did not know that the Maestro Don A had his hands on egg beaters back at his start. Now I feel even better. It also pulls together a bit more on the two Hornet race boats that were rigged with OB's when he started Donzi in 1964.

The building could still be there, but defintely not an outboard motor shop. Emmons ave. which is pararell to the bay
thrived in it's hey day (turn of the century to mid 50's) for having one of the biggest fishing fleets in the northeast.
slowly declined thru the 60's 70's & 80's .......although the fishing fleet now is half the size it once was, Emmons ave.
in SHB is revitalized today.

All the paper work is done. Monday I'll submit a request to Community board 15 to have 1206 ave. R in Sheepshead bay Bklyn.
be renamed "DON ARONOW WAY!" ..............I really don't know what to expect? ....I have no lobby or weight to help it along.
It's me and Michael Aronow alone.......This would be a good time to see if the powers to be get this one right, because all they
really have to do is read his bio!
