View Full Version : New to Donzi but not to Boating (Classic 22)

My first real post here and I'd like to say thanks to the forum

I have been lurking for awhile trying to learn what I could

I just picked up a Donzi Classic 22 and here is my back story

I'm 47

I grew up as a kid working my dads small marina in southern NJ in the summers

Ive been around boats since I can remember and have worked as a dock hand ,boat boy, mate all the way up to running my old mans 40 footers off shore

I've been boating and fishing my whole life

I'm not a stranger to performance boats and have spent time on scarabs , formulas and various ski boats

My dad had one of the faster off shore rigs 35 + years ago

In my youth I would always see those dam Donzis buzzing around the back bays at that magic glassy time at the end of the day

I learned to know the sound of a certain sweet 16 that has hanging on a lift a few coves down

I would hear him coming and just smile as I watched him rip by ....... The boat sounded incredible

The Brooders of MAB Paint fame had another yellow sweet 16 with a Berkley jet drive that would roost by with a rooster tail that seemed like it went forever

Point is as a kid I lusted after a Donzi but it never seemed to happen

My boats always seemed to be the more fishing type

Robala center consoles , Ranger Bass boats for a time when I was into that and even an airboat which I still have for chasing small mouth on the Susquehanna and Delaware

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa302/jparanee/Vehicles/DDE656E3-6D3D-407F-91E7-3F527B0EC21A.jpg (http://s200.photobucket.com/user/jparanee/media/Vehicles/DDE656E3-6D3D-407F-91E7-3F527B0EC21A.jpg.html)

I also had a 31 Contender for the last 12 or so years that I used up and down the North East coast chasing Marlin ,Tuna and Striper

I loved tournament fishing and running to the canyons etc.

The last few years the Contender has sat in a warehouse gathering dust

I just had no time and it was alway easier to jump in a car with a rod and jump on one of my buddies boats that were sitting in the water in different ports up and down the coast

With three daughters that have no real interest in fishing slowly my dreams of chasing Marlin and Tuna with them started to fade

Well two or three years went by not using the Contender except for a shake down run on a local lake a year or so ago and along came a good guy that made me an offer I couldn't refuse on my pristine Contender

There was only one condition to the sale I had to find a replacement boat. I've always had at least two boats around

Something to take my kids and wife out on

The wife has family along the coast in Delaware and they are always bugging me to come down but floating around on a pontoon boat just doesn't agree with me :)

The Contender was just to big to haul around and pull tubes with and the airboat does not work for pulling anything :)

So I first turned down the guys offer on the Contender and as I drove away I thought of what boat I would like to take the kids and wife on to explore the back bays pull tubes and do some exploring upstate in The Thousand Islands were I used to fish. I can stick a rod or two up under the bow and when I'm done doing the family thing I can jam out to the rips or rocks and try for a Striper or two :)

The found memories of my youth watching those Donzis rip around came flooding back and I started to search the Internet and the web looking for a Donzi that would suit my needs

First growing up as a boat boy I am rather picky so I knew it would have to be clean. I wanted something a little hypo in the engine department and being that I wanted to do some exploring on it I wanted a 22 footer.

I wanted a boat from the hand laid hull days

I also wanted a fresh water boat

Growing up in the salt I know how hard on things it is

I stumbled on the boat I bought. It was only listed a few days when I found it

It is a 96 hull

it has a fresh Mercury Blue Motor and was owned and built by Precision Marine Performance in upstate NY

I called the owner who had built the boat for his son. From the impression I got from him it might of turned out a bit to fast and he was concerned :)

We made a deal. In that deal I asked him what else would he do to the boat. He said that he would add dual ram steering. A quick call to Mayfair and the kit was on its way to him for an install before I picked up the boat

With the the boat there was two props. A Labbed left hand drive 25 pitch prop and a right hand drive 4 blade 26 pitch prop what ch has been sent out already for a lab finish

I called the guy that wanted the Contender and agreed to sell it

Well this all took place recently and I just got the Donzi home and I'm pleased

They say a picture is worth a thousand words so a video has got be a bunch more

I like making videos so I made a mini documentary on the experience

http://youtu.be/iT8shYmxkUw

I'm going to miss the Contender but it's time to turn the page and this little classic has made it easier

Please tell me what you think of the boat etc

thanks

Congratulations!!!!

Welcome to the Donzi disease. I am sorry to inform you, you will not want another boat. Unless, you have some Poodle in you, then you will want every fast boat made.

We have very similar backgrounds as I grew up with my parents owning a marina as well. My family is also from Sunbury, PA. I've been skiing on the Susquehanna and have fond memories of spending time there. Especially when the pheasant hunting was good.

It looks like the boat is in very good hands and will be well taken care of. Keep an eye out for events and gatherings and try to make a few. It's a great way to meet our fellow boaters.

Best regards,
Taz

Good eye

this boat came with two props

the one that is on a left hand 25 pitch that has been lab finished and is what the boat broke 80 miles an hour wth 3 guys and a full tank

it it also came with a 4 blade right hand 26 pitch that is out getting lab finished as we speak

Bravo I drives can be reversed by switching the cable in the throttle commander

I will switch it back to a right hand drive when I get the 4 blade back and probable run that prop most of the time for more all around performance

a left hand drive is supposed to work a bit better for solo high speed runs

I don't know if that is true I'm just quoting what I was told by the guy that built the engine

JP,

Welcome to the Donzi world. I too have a 1996 22 Classic. I love it. I take it out on the Sassafras River most summer weekends. The whole family likes to go out on it (wife and 3 boys).

Nice looking boat ! If you are going to be running a lot in salt water , I highly recommend a closed cooling system. Half systems are reasonably priced

The bottoms of the main seat cushions were a tad ratty so the netting was replaced etc

the staples were pulled and the vinyl had pulled up so everything was restretched and stapled

on on the rear seat cushions some snap needed redone and there was some reinforcing that needed done on some spots

finally just a good scrubbing and vinyl treatment

the netting was mildewed and stained etc

lastly the bases were steel wooled and everything was greased and lubed

all in all the boat was very sound for its age, it just needed attention here and there and lots of little details

besides a thorough cleaning and replacing weathered parts the big bits were adding the hydraulic steering new gauges , throttle commander and cables

the rest is just cleaning up and rewiring etc

My wife would love if I added one but I've been reluctant thinking it may spoil the classic look.

Patrick, are you looking for something for her to sit on? Or a way to get back into your boat? If its the latter, and agreeing with not changing the look of your Donzi, the hidden ladder that Hornet Marine installs is a clean solution.

Don't want to cut a hole for the hidden latter. I have thought about the removable dive latters that hook to a bracket. I had added swim platforms to my 24' Pantera and 24' Superboat in the past.

it is well done

well engineered and there are no stress cracks where it is mounted

this is my attempt at a family boat :) so it's a must for my kids and wife

I run labbed props and they are sharp so a platform and a prop cover will save me headaches and hurt kids

I like the throttle controls. I'm just not sure about having the seperate throttle an gear control. Very cool look. Are the flappers seperate from the tips? It looks like they slip on over somethin??? I wish I had a work shop to park my Donzi in an work on her like u guyz do

It it might take some time getting used to

I grew up driving boats with separate gear and throttle controls so I think I will be okay

the 33 C cables and the new controller are very smooth ......maybe to smooth :)

i won't know till I run it and get it fine tuned

the tips are a one piece slip on

the flapper is contained

it's great to have it inside to work on but now my tucks outside were the boat goes normally :)

I think the biggest potential issue w/separate controls on a Bravo is
the cone clutch doesn't hold up well when shifted into gear above
idle speed. Of course the typical single control doesn't allow for that
mistake to be made.

I loved my dual-lever single-action, but just swapped it out anyway. I'll pile on to George's comment with the safety side of the single-lever dual-action argument. With two sticks, the time you grab the wrong one will be when you are most distracted. And even if you never make a mistake, the twin-lever style is daunting for many guest-drivers. FWIW

I ordered one in red. When I ordered the cables, there was only one option 3300C. Is this the same as the 33C?
And I did not have a color option on the cable ends.
Maybe I should give them a call.

Yes the 3300C and 33C are the same

you can also run gen II cables with this control by just removing the threaded female brass ends that come on the controller and hooking your gen II cables up

if you do the 3300c cables you will need the adapters for the engine side

I do. It think that there is a color option on cables the Hardin 3300c cables are red

I really like my dual controls (A LOT) but I'll admit it makes me nervous to let the wife take the boat or other "guest drivers" knowing they might make a mi$take.

I went with the 3300C/33C Maxflex. There is a choice on color for the cables...Red or black.

I had to call around the world to get a 12' but found one direct from Hardin. CP had the 13'.

I'm getting anxious for spring already.

The boat is looking awesome JP.
I received my Hardin side shifter (in red). One note: did you check the neutral starter interlock switch? The one on the gear shift which prevents starting in gear. Mine seems to have a very narrow range where it is engaged. I'd rather not wiggle the level to get it to start.
But, the thing is built with amazing precision and when it is installed may be right on the money.
Have you tested yours?

Also, anyone know what the button switch is for about the kill switch?

Yes, the cross brace comes into effect when your running hard and the bottom and stringers are moving in every direction!
They do, you know!
Anyway, any transverse stress is taken by the cross brace, and not the heat exchanger
and its mounts.

Joe, tell Mark he does really nice work!
Well done!

Details, details, details......

The install looks good., like the bracket.

Looks really nice !! Have you decided on which coolant you are going to use ? I am using the Blue Honda coolant in my setup

I think running it into the bilge isn't a good idea for a couple of reasons;
1) Eventually you'll be pumping antifreeze into the environment.
2) You'll be losing coolant instead of recovering it and eventually the coolant will run low.
The main problem is where to put the tank!

Whatever coolant you use, be sure and mix it with either reverse osmosis, or deionized water.
I use a clean 5 gallon bucket and dump the first bottle of coolant into the bucket, then fill the bottle with pure water and pour it in the bucket, mix thoroughly, and refill the bottle or some other container with the mixed coolant to fill the system.......it takes a lot of coolant.

Installed my Hardin shifter and it is nice!
The throttle is really smooth. The start interlock switch does have a narrow band. May need to build it up with some JB weld so I don't have to wiggle the shifter for starting.
My shift lever is a little stiff. How is yours? It could be from the shorter level over the stock lever. I really hope I don't have to replace the intermediate cable. That is a pain to get to at the drive.

Nice work and it looks really good !!
When you start running with distilled water be careful to check the level often. It's amazing how much of it disapates. I went out around 4 or 5 times running just distilled water in the cooling system and I drained it all out after each outting and put in new stuff. It's cheap enough and as my boat had been in salt water I thought it might be a good idea. I did do about a 150 mile trip in freshwater before I did the install.

I think it's a better option than re gel coating

I'm using white Monstaliner and will apply it with more of an orange peel finish vs a sharp texture

should make for a more usable locker space and look good

Here is a link that has the exact dimensions etc of the weather stripping

I know it's standard fair to have the deck lid making contact with glass on glass but I think the weather stripping adds a nice cushion effect

while he was doing that I was in the cockpit working on gel coat

I had a few little spots that needed touched up but the biggest one was a palm sized patch of faint spider cracks right in front of the passenger seat

looks like someone dropped something ..... They were very faint but I'm to anal for that so I ground them out to the glass and re gel coated the area

This is before I wet sanded it out after I just filled the area

I'm very happy with the color much and I'm confident after a wet sand and blend it will be a good match

Just a heads up, be prepared to adjust the tension on the throttle lever on your first run. I wasn't and it was a pain holding the throttle. The shifter is smooth.

Not sure. I got home late and just parked the boat.

I'll take it apart this weekend. I think there is only one adjustment. It has a set screw with a lock nut on the back.

dont take it apart

Just called Hardin

they set them up on the light side promoting having to keep your hand on it

the tensioner is the Allen head at the 3 o'clock position coming into the center of the control from the port side .... No need to take apart just increase tension with Allen head

I've used a whole lot of premium waxes over the last 40 years and nothing is as durable as Collinite . And it's surprisingly easy to use , even the pure paste wax.

I agree

reed I have some older collectable black cars so I was always very picky with my waxes

mark turned me on to it and I'm impressed on my cars

I'm hoping it is as good on marine applications

here is a pic of a black car that he did with it

it's an optical elution

this is an 19 year old black car original paint

all I can say is that the shine is impressive :)

Okay today was the day I wanted to finish the deck and rear seat locker

originally after I repaired the spider cracks and nicks in the lockers I was going to re gel coat them but after a lot of deliberation I decided two use a product from Magnet Paints

they make Monstaliner

this is is a roll on bed liner that comes in many colors

I opted for white

the first part is to prime the surface with a two part epoxy primer

I used one from their product line

Okay im stoked at how this turned out

I was very apprehensive going into this ........ But it turned out great :)

just st finished and pulled the tape

I really like how it turned out

I left it with an orange peeled finish so dirt would not get stuck in mocks and kranies

now my lockers have a tuff finish and I can actually put something in there with out chipping and cracking the gel coat :)

Well I'm officially ready to see if it floats :)

we we ran it today in the driveway and everything was perfect

as soon as it hit 170 the thermastate opened and it dropped to under 150 on the hose

it was easy to dial in the throttle and controller

really great systems from Monitor and Harding

we changed the oil, set the timing tweaked the carb and she's running like a rapped ape

next step is to dump it in the drink and run it

big thanks to all my friends that helped me out over the winter and to everyone on here especially George Carter

George took my calls and answered my questions and his awesome build thread was so important in being an awesome guide on how to do things right

here is a video that will be rather boring to some but I like making videos and I did it as a way to document the project

thanks again and the next video will be on water

there is a music version and a non music version on my YouTube channel

Very cool video. The boat looks better than new.

Question: Did you initially pull the boat out of a detached garage, then back it up the hill to the main house? That is a cool set up. Sorry if I'm getting too personal.

Not at all

there is a carriage house on my property that I store things in and that my elderly mother lives in

the boat was worked on in the carriage house all winter and we pulled it up to the main house where it is level to run it etc

We had the maiden voyage yesterday

Mark and I took it to a small local lake

there is a 45 mile an hour speed limit on the lake and there was a bass tournament going on so needless to say the other boaters were not to happy to see us :)

the boat ran great and the only issue we had were a few gauges acting up

this was the first time I have driven a Classic so I was mostly just trying to get the feel and see how it handled and of course how the engine was running

due to the lake constraints we only ran it up to about 70 and I was running way to much tab as you will see in the video

I had more throttle and I am sure if I air it out with less tab it will touch close to 80 with this 4 blade labbed prop

all in all I'm stoked at how it ran and handled

I definitely need to to log some seat time but hopefully with all the work we did I'll get lots of trouble free hours behind the helm

We were only running water in the closed cooling system to make sure we didn't have any leaks under load.

the system world flawlessly and next we will fill it with coolant fix the gauges that were not responding and it should be a wrap

thanks to all that helped especially George Carter :)

I fixed the video and cleaned it up and added some music

Great video and congratulations !

Now, here's a question for you . As someone with a lot of seat time in many boats did you find that it did anything strange , anything that was new to you compared to other V bottomed hulls ?

I've often read here from others that the 22C does 'things' that are sometimes unsettling but I've never really figured out what they mean .

(and that comes from someone who's driven a LOT of deep v hulls)

Thx Taz

I made a mistake while adjusting my trim tabs to level the ride I inadvertently left my starboard side tab down and I was having to over compensate by dragging my port side more than I would of had to to level the ride

I should of noticed this but I was to caught up with other things etc

when I looked out the back I could see I was getting twin rooster tails from having my tabs down to much but we were only doing quick blasts due to the speed limits on the lake I couldn't really wind it up for long periods of time with out risking getting hassled

this trip was to get the feel and see what was working etc

I know now my tabs definitely due work now :)

I'm anxious to run it again and air it out

This was literally my first run and I recorded it as it went

no big surprises

All boats have their handling nuances

cats , bass boats air boats etc all need a certain amount of time to get used too

the Donzi didn't really suprise me

due use to the narrow beam and relatively deep vee I could feel right away that it would feel a bit tippy so to speak

Nothing scary the boat just likes to lean into a turn

like a jet or a airboat it seems to like to be set into a turn and powered thru it

since I did not air it out and I was running way to much tab it felt rock solid up to 70

as as soon as I get a chance to really get the bow up in the air me trim it up I will let you know my opinion of how it feels at real speed

I think a lot of people that comment on these boats handling are coming from boats that really don't need much when it comEs to driver input

anyone that's balanced a high speed bass boat at speed or a small cat etc I don't think would have issue

in my mind the more high performance a boat is especially when they are on the small side the more driver input is going to be required

I would of loved to of lifted my tabs and trimmed up my lower and went for a real rip but we were getting a lot of bad looks from the tournament guys and I wanted to try and be a little respectful :)

plus they ticket bad on this little lake

I can imagine once I air it out a bit due the rounded ride plate area of these boats they might become a balancing act but I'm not to worried :)

Not many follks here have done all their own glass work, not to mention gel work.

I was lucky and most of everything was good

I've been buying boats for along time and while I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed this boat had the key things

solid hull ... Motor I liked.... Good trailer

the boat was put together sloppy but with the help of some friends we made it right :)

In retrospect there are other boats that would of served as a better family runabout but rember my family river boat is a big block airboat :)

ive always liked driver oriented rides with character

and believe me when I say ....... When I'm done driving and pulling my kids around and taking the old lady out to a dockside restaurant I'm gonna crank up that blue motor and chase birds a few miles off shore casting plugs to linesiders :)

yes im gonna be that jerk that idles up to a jetty or bridge to cast a fly or plug from a big block Donzi ....... Bet I have the best sounding fishing boat at the rocks :)

so much so I came home home from that first run and tried out the new SUMO rod holders :)

I'm jealous. Definitely need tabs with my boat. My fingers are constantly resting on the switches.

Looks and sounds good JP!

If you're going to end up using your tabs a bunch, you might want to consider relocating the switches. I couldn't imagine trying to run my boat with the switches on the dash. It'd require some glass and gel work, but I've always been ok with making others do more work. ;)

Pic shows where switches are located on mine, (although they are removed because I was working on them).

Yeller. I am also always using my tabs and have relocated my trim switch to right next to the throttle stick on the top of the "gunnel". IMO, the factory should of done this for us.

I also rewired the switch so if you push down on the rear of the switch, the corresponding TAB GOES DOWN. Right switch=right tab. Push on the front of the switch, the TAB COMES UP.

I think on of the reasons I am always using my tabs is because where I boat, the conditions are always changing, current, wind and freighter boat wakes.

it is only very early in the morning can I run with my tabs all they way up.

Haven't been thru the locks at Iroquois, but I have been thru the locks up at Muskoka which are much smaller locks.

Remember, the locks on the St. Lawrence are large enough to handle freighters.

There is also a length min for the locks so I have been told, I am thinking 22 feet is the bubble, but I am not at all sure.

No need to go any further down river as there is a whole bunch of water to enjoy "above" the locks.

I like driving alongside them briefly as I pass them on the St.Clair or Detroit Rivers. Saw a big ocean vessel from Singapore once. It had tugs guiding it through the channel and we listened to them on the VHF. 35 feet is about the maximum draft to navigate the channels.

I can only imagine the size of the wake from a freighter. I've boated around a lot of them, but only while they are at anchor. We get a lot of pretty big tug boats around here and I remember when I built my 16C and I was much younger and much more foolish, my buddy and I were jumping the wakes of the smaller tugs. We then spotted a big one in the distant and hammered the throttle. We didn't realize just HOW BIG it really was until we were right on top of it! We probably had eyes the size of watermelons when we got on top of it. I don't know how high or how far we went, but it was crazy. My buddy, who's was over 230lbs, ended up in his seat upside down. His head was under the dash and his feet where on the top of the seat. I hadn't finished the upholstery yet and only the passenger seat was done. My seat was still a wood frame and everything had flexed sooo much that the drivers seat ended up cutting the upholstery on the passenger seat.
Surprisingly the boat didn't crack at all, but my nerve did. That pretty much cured us both of ever wanting to jump the boat again. :tooth:

If you're trying for an umbrella, I'd do a small mod to the (or make a new) cooler lid between the seats, to fit the pole base, and put a serged hole in the carpet. Then guy out the shade with 4 small eyes on the deck. Or even put in midship cleats and guy it out on all the cleats. Maybe even buy a square sunshade, rather than a custom one. FWIW.
