Just bought a 90 Sweet 16. It was a two owner boat and very well maintained. Replaced the original fuel pump with an electronic unit as the original was failing. Being my first Donzi I was wondering what this boat should do top end. I have only been able to hit 47.5 gps. Granted that was in a bit of chop 1 1/2 ft waves but I would think this boat would have a little more top end. It only has the 4.3 but still, trimmed out to the max I'm surprised it isn't a 50 - 55 mph boat. Any advice?

Figured I would include a couple quick pics as well after asking the questions.

Nice boat. Welcome to the Donzi Registry! I think maybe the bimini is holding you back. ;)

I had the bimini off, 1/4 tank of fuel and just myself in the boat. I'm thinking the chop may have prevented me from getting over 50. Not sure. I feel like I got a good deal on the boat though, $5600 with the trailer. I'm very surprised how it handles rough water. The trim tabs are a lifesaver but having never had a quality boat it REALLY makes a difference. I fear I'm hooked on Donzi's.

JK about the bimini. There are plenty of folks here with experience with the 16s and they will chime in when they see this.

Welcome to the site!

I have personally driven another 1990 sweet 16, with the 2-bbl, V6, 190 hp. OMC Cobra drive, 21 pitch prop. GPS at 58 mph on Lake Michigan. If I remember correctly, I think it was at 5,200 rpms.

Which, BTW is .7 mph FASTER than my 1967 Donzi 16 went with a 260 hp V8, 350 with a Volvo 290 outdrive that has trim.

And the 16 will be faster in 1' to 1.5' chop.

This should be moved to "Donzi Performance Talk". No one looks in "True Lies". More people would see it and give you advice. I only know a thing or two about the 22s. :) Maybe a moderator can move it?
