Is my money not green enough?

For quite a while now Ive been looking for a project Donzi. Id prefer a Classic but if a GT came along it wouldnt be out of the question. Now the key word here is PROJECT!! I cant stress that enough. If anyone has one and isnt asking a ridiculous number Im interested. Im located in Maine and Id like to pick one up within the next month. Thanks.

where have you been looking? the searches I have run have come up with some classics but no real basket cases most are turnkey boats that are priced from 7k to 15k having seen and done the project thing a turnkey classic in that range is a good deal . searches for projects on uncommon boats like a GT or X18 you may need to enlarge the search area. There is an original GT well almost original someone replaced the transom in permont ny search hudson valley on CL. there is also a newer 16 classic in rhode island that needs help the asking price may be high for it's condition some haggling is needed

Start with 2k but this Minx will most likely need stringers & transom .This is my opion after seeing what Jeff Hall found when he removed the deck from his very clean Minx.

I paid about $5,300.00 for my Minx about 10 years ago. I went to Cleveland to get it, that's about 1,000 miles.
The bad news was, the engine was full of water but had some good Stainless Marine parts on it. The gimbal housing was corroded through and I had to find a replacement.
That one was corroded through too (people lie in their ads), but I was able to get it welded.
The good, but not great news was, the stringers and transom were solid, but I had to add considerable structural reinforcement (like all Classics in the mid '80's).
This boat turned out to be a real project. There were worse boats available, but probably much better boats available for an additional $2,500.00.
I ended up spending about 500-600 hours and a total of $25,000.00 over 2-3 years and sold it for $18,000.00. I could have waited for more than $20,000.00, but I was ready to move on.
These things end up being really expensive, what's the term?

P.S.;
The boat mentioned above has no windshield.
Don't buy a Minx w/o a windshield as they're difficult to replace, and expensive.
Mine didn't have one either, but I was fortunate enough to get one from a wrecked boat.
How often is that going to happen?

Funny thing, thats the Minx I was supposed to get and the guy screwed me. hats the one I bought all the parts for and made the deal like 7 times not to mention I sent a deposit and then miraculously the boat allegedly got sold out from under me! This went on for almost 6 years mind you! The biggest issue was every time I wanted to get it, this guy had a new excuse. One issue was he had no paper work and I know it came out of Ohio. I had no way to track down the previous owner to have him sign off on the sale since this guy allegedly didnt get any paperwork with the boat! Then he had an excuse that all the snow was plowed in front of it! I have ALL the emails and text messages from every time I was going to buy it. The other day when I had enough and called saying I was on my way up to get it, his wife answered the phone and said they sold it to someone else. Now I could care less about the $500 deposit I gave them but its the principle of the matter. thats why I decided to post here instead.

To say the least Carl, it does! I like projects because I would feel horrible tearing apart an original to make it into something I want. I have no issue in doing the work and paying for what I cant do. Theres not a big rush, but when my tunnel boat is done the end of this year I want a Donzi to start on!

again most of the classics out there in the NE are turnkey or only need minimal work , If they sell at +/- 10 % of their asking price it will bode well for resale value

I concur with Carl C., the name HAS GOT TO GO!!! :biggrin.: This was my Uncles boat and he had a blast with it in the mid 80's when McDonalds was booming. He had it in a few grand openings and the kids loved it. But, that was then, this is now.
