As for packages, look for the Big Horn or Long Horn. I have had my Ram for 5 plus years (early 2009 model) and have done a lot of towing boats since new and have had no mechanical issues. I bought my latest Donzi (6000lbs plus trailer) in KY and towed it to my home in Englewood Florida, and the Ram acted like it had no limit to its power towing though the foot hills of KY and the Mountains of TN. At the time of purchase, I outfitted my Ram with Magnaflo High performance aggressive stainless steel exhaust with 3.5inch stainless steel polished exhaust tips because I like how she sounds set up like that. Then I had the front end raised 2 inches using procomp leveling kit so when the tires finally needed replacing, I installed Nitto Terra Grapplers 285-70-17 and she rides and looks great and because it just says Ram on the doors, no one can tell if its a 1500 or 2500. Keep in mind the 5.7 Hemi (395hp- 425Ft lbs of torque) is optional on the 1500, and is standard in the 3500.

Does it have a full 6.5 foot bed in the crew cab?

Does it have a full 6.5 foot bed in the crew cab? I was just looking at the new 2014 Rams and they have 3 options for beds in the 1500, 5ft, 6.5 and 8ft. As for the Crew Cab, I believe that the 3 optional beds are still available. They wanted to give me 20,000 trade in for my paid off 09, but I was just looking for my son, Im not ready to trade in yet. I only paid 28,000 for my Ram with SLT plus package 4x4 with heavy duty towing package (9500lbs). I forgot to mention that mine has the Quad cab with the 6.5ft bed.

A no brainier in my book - the F250 with the 6.7 diesel. Lots of torque, reliable, and much better mileage than previous Ford diesels. JMHO. Bill

Kind of agree but my 6.0 has given me a bad taste for diesels. I know it was a problem engine for Ford but all diesels are overly complicated these days.

F150 4x4 Ecoboost with Max Tow package, Platinum, thats what I have........... you can get the 40-20-40 seat in an FX4 or XLT... I gross about 13,000k with my boat and it'll run 6th gear all day at 72-73+ with the cruise set, light years better truck than the 2010 HD2500 6.0 I traded in, I run an AFE intake, SCT tuner with 5 Star 91 tow tune, and Magnaflow single exhaust, it'll tow another 3-4k easily

I came a split second from getting a new Dodge but at the time you couldn't get the 6.5 bed with the true crew cab (not the little crew or maxi cab) now you can, I have a Hemi in a 2012 Grand Cherokee as well with the tow pkg and it's purty sturdy/powerful up to 6,000# but a tad squirrley over that,, had I been able to get the correct cab/bed I needed on the Dodge with a Hemi/3.90 gears it would have been a hard choice from the F150, Dodge has come light years ahead with the '13-'14 trucks, they have done an admirable job IMO

Uhh, your missing that as much as I like a 3/4 ton diesel I like many others are concerned over how complicated and unreliable many have become. My 6.0 has left me on the side of the road too many times. I was looking for others opinions thanks for sharing yours. I am probably leaning towards the 6.7 PS but like i said a bit gun shy...

It is fairly common knowledge how many problems the Ford 6.0 diesel had. I have a 2009 F350 with the 6.4 diesel which is reliable, but it is horrible on mileage. The new 6.7 will get you 18MPG+ and is reliable and lots of torque. I might mention that I have only heard great things about both the Ecoboost as well as Hemi if gas is your thing.

I tend to be a Ram guy, but Boating Magazine did a towing comparison between the Ford EcoBoost F150 and the Raptor to get a feel for how a smaller turbo'd engine would do against the "top of the line" V8.

They even surprised themselves with how the EcoBoost did. It was better in almost every category, and WAY better in non-towing economy.

Haven't looked in a while, but my Chevy is a 3/4 ton 6.0 gas...I love it, though the mileage is lacking compared to most of the newer ones.

I like Ford's 5.0 over the Ecoboost because it is just much simpler. Mighty strong, great trans. I would have bought a Hemi, but it wasn't the deal mine was, and I wasn't so sure about the multiple displacement. From what I can tell, if you drive 75 the Hemi runs on 8 cylinders and gets poor mileage. The 5.0 is sweet with a great sound.

Also, Ford's is a true 6 speed, the 6speed MOPAR isn't. Their 8 speed suppose to be great. My truck is probably very low 14s in quarter...the Hemi? probably high 13s with the correct gearing.

I recently got to test drive the new Ram 3.0 diesel with the 8 speed

i'm a die hard diesel truck man, been doing this gig for 44 years, and I don't get impressed very much, but I was VERY impressed, not quite as fast as my Eco, but not a slouch either, but the torque felt the same as the Eco for sure, production is sold out on this Ram-diesel truck through August now, the very first day of order bank allowance a month or so ago they logged about 8,500 sold units on immediate order, they sold out a 6 month buildout in less than 1 day, i'm sure it's 3 times that now

Thanks for all your input. ...probably make a decision next week. Anyone have thought on safety in a crash between 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton? I drive my family all over the place in the truck...

This is an interesting engine. It comes from MV which is owned by Fiat. At this point, I think Fiat has been better for Chrysler than DB ever thought of being.
I was using MV diesel engines in hydraulic power units 35 years ago. They were very sturdy units. Most of these were sub 50 HP and air cooled but were very robust and never gave problems.

Don't know that I'd expect any major difference, unless the airbag schemes are radically different.

FWIW, I recently had a small incident in my Expedition and rented a Taureg for a few days.
I'd say Porsche Light. Really well equipped and something I wouldn't mind having. Solid and
pretty quick. It returned about 20 MPG in my driving. I think the price pushes about $60K.
Also, it doesn't scream "EXPENSIVE" like the Porsche does.....that's important in my business world.

I really like SUV's. My 12 year old Expedition does everything I need it for. It'll carry 8' lumber,
or seven adults, it's extremely quiet, and comfortable. It has a turning circle of about 60% of a pickup.
IMHO, unless you're carrying dirt, it'll do most anything most folks would use a pickup for.
For those few other odd jobs, I have three fairly new Tundras that also do very well in my world.

-George, I put 170,000 trouble free miles on my Expedition. -that was a great vehicle. - My F250 starting acting up at about 100K. I'm hoping the duramax runs and runs and runs and runs....

Engines are not the only factor. Suspension is a key factor. As much as I'm a Chevy guy I think Fords have it :kingme:. From what I've seen in NH with the frost heaves and such, Rams "more so" and Chevy's eat wheel bearings and ball joints regularly.
