Any idea if a nosecone is worth it on a Volvo 280? Drawbacks?
I picked one up and am debating using it.
I have hydraulic steering already.
21gt 383 sbc ~66 mph
I'm worried about fairing it in correctly.

Your worries are valid. I would op for more ponies if speed was a issue.

the gains might not be all that dramatic. where is your water pickup? yes if not straight it will be a bad thing. what prop are you turning

I can play with carb and timing a little, but engine runs fine now, I don't want a bigger cam, I had to play with extending risers to fix slight reversion, probably because I let it idle too low, but I love the lope.
Through hull pick up. I filled the stock pick up with epoxy, stayed on fine.
Solas 23 to 5000, saw 5200 extended once in perfect 1' chop in Great South Bay.
I'm leery of making it worse if it doesn't blend hydrodynamically.

Johnnywhale, did you happen to get a GPS speed when running 5,000 using the 23 Solas?

Full nose cone is to much. Instead of steering at the pivot point of the drive it steers by the nose of the drive. Do what I did and just "French" off the nose of the drive a little.

Yes, I know, a friend did a nose cone with cable steering. He had to buy new underwear. The hydraulic steering we have is stable at any speed in any water, that's why I might try the nose cone.

No, and the 66 mph is based on just nudging a friend going 65. My speedo is all over the place 70/40 at same time. If I could find a matching gps speedo I'd buy it. Thinking of putting a hidden one in the glove compartment.

How about a nice cheap hand held GPS to carry on boat. Cost about a 100 and never have to doubt accurate speed.

it may pay to find a lower and set it up with the nosecone and try it. if it helps keep it if it doesn't put your old lower back on it. this way you know for sure.

66 on a volvo gt is very respectable

I have a Volvo 290 that came with a nosecone stuck on but not finished off.

How do you check for proper alignment? Reading this thread, it sounds like it's best just to remove it if you're not running a lot of HP.

Good idea, I have a complete aq275 2:15 (?) unit for spare parts. The "fin" is different though from an aq280.

The free Speed Box app is another to try.

I guess the eye is the best. if it has the cut out for the water inlet you could try and take measurements to the edge of the cone. or take measurements off the back of the lower to a few points on the edge of the cone

Thank you Matty ....... I was guessing a good eyeball is as good as it gets.

what is the point when a nosecone gets to be beneficial?

if that's the case, I'll just remove the aborted installation on mine :smash:

Since the installation sucks, I'd pull it just to see what happens. Easy enough to throw back on there the right way if you decide to go that route.

I doubt anyone can throw an exact speed on where it becomes effective; too many other variables to take into account, from x-dimension to prop to hull design to....

Take it from experence if you don't have hydraulic steering the boat will become scary uncontrolable. anything you are putting ahaid of the steering pivot will adversly make you lose control. with any slight movement the force of the water will aid in turning. Invest in hydraulic steering. I have owned this boat for 47 years by far the best thing I ever did.

There's a pretty major design difference with the pointy lowers versus an alpha or bravo, in that with enough trim, the point might introduce a very different sort of drag. Where the stock designs have a linear front edge, viewed from the side. Makes me curious of anyone feels it kick in under extreme trim, just as with the point earlier about it grabbing when steering. Again, don't know, just curious.

when i first got mine it did have some steering issues but that was wear in the helmet bushing once fixed my boat was rock stable with a solas and the cable steering

if you do pull it off try not to bust it up too bad they are harder and harder to find going to be worth some $ to some one
