View Full Version : How many 22 Classic have left the Factory.

Anyone out there with some statistics over the 22 classic numbers made? First year on the market? Numbers of Black Hawks boats? The fastest setup to leave the factory? Where there many smallblocks made (mine was a -98 SB Bravo)
Also interested in Odd "off the shelf boats" like we have that drive and that engine ,put in in that hull and sell it. If they ever reasoned that way. Curious .

My favorite oddball that I would love to own but they probably only made a handful was the 315hp Yanmar diesel.

I had high hopes for this thread. I know that a couple of 22s left the factory with 525 EFIs. AFAIK that is the biggest engine package that has been factory installed. There are people here who know so much more about the history of these boats though.

I *think* there was also a 16 done with a 4 cyl Yanmar as well, but that was probably done after-the-fact, and not a factory deal, same owner..

Then I sat in the only one made as it was on display at the Desoto fishing tournament many years ago(2001/02)in Bradenton. If memory serves it was a black/white hull w/ Bravo drive and a long 6cyl grey engine.

the 22 probably has the most variants of all of the classic models, some basic info on the 22 family can be found here,
http://www.lgdonziclassic.net/pages/22feet.asp the 7 meter is not part of the variants.

variants of the 22 classic style hull including different hulls and /or graphics and features

I would say the SE would be the rarest .

also remember that the dealers ordered unique options as well as down and dirty cheap options.
there was one late model 22 with teak floor and accents in lk george very nice. Bob at nelems always ordered unique color boats optioned to the hilt.

The red 40th comes to mind as a economy price driven order from the dealer single ram tabs base model 496 motor not sure what dealer ordered that one

Very good list Matty!

One very minor correction, the TR is spelled Testarossa or Testa Rossa and according to folks that actually speak and understand Italian, is pronounced "testa ross-ah".

But what would I know about any of this stuff????

Was the Ilmor put in at the factory? Thought it was...if so, seems like that might be as rare as any.

I have pictures of the Yanmar 22 from the 1999(?) Dealer Show on an old hard disk. I'll see if I can find them.

My hull number is: DNAC 2024C 898 . guess the C is for classic and the 98 for production year . Can you fill me in on the other figures ?

DNA= Donzi's mfgr I'd
C2 = classic 22
024= 24 th hull built in that model year
C8= certification date M/Y C is march and 8 is 1998
98 is the model year

That came on a 22 classic? Yes stock mounted on my 98 dash . And they also cald it 23 deck boat. They are very close to 23 ft. of coarse. A bit strange anyway.

That's either the incorrect passenger info plate on placed your boat~~`
Or you have a 23 Deckboat there instead of a "22 Classic" speedboat.
Donzi did in fact build "deckboats"

Matty said it is a "22 Classic" from the serial numbers .

So I guess the Donzi factory ran out of "22 Classic" passenger plates~~~or it was built on a monday and some Donzi factory worker had a very long party weekend ?

I would like to see a photo as to where 12 people would ever sit in a Donzi "22 Classic" !

My favorite oddball that I would love to own but they probably only made a handful was the 315hp Yanmar diesel.

Was this diesel engine power experiment designed as a diesel motoryacht tender in an effort to capture the upscale large motoryacht tender market ?

I seem to remember reading about this Yanmar Diesel powered Donzi in some boating magazines many years ago~~~but I forget the exact details as to why, & exactly when, it was originally built now ?
For some odd reason I believe it was coupled to an Arneson surface drive ?

I seem to remember my Dad seeing it once at an Atlantic City In-water fall boatshow~~taking interested folks on short test demonstration rides all day long.

Does anyone know it's top speed ?
Could not have had very good hole-shot acceleration.
I bet it is was also a fairly noisy & smelly ride~~~and Not that great twin V-8 exhaust gasoline rumble we all know & like here.
You would also always be cleaning the soot off the transom I'd bet !

Does anyone know it's top speed ? faster than you think, MUCH faster..

Could not have had very good hole-shot acceleration. quite the contrary, equal too or faster than a 496 did... torque baby, torque

I bet it is was also a fairly noisy & smelly ride~~~ nope..

I did read a write up on the diesel a couple years ago. I might have it on my other laptop. I remember it doing 62 but you could cruise all day at 50 and burn like 7gph. I thought it had a Bravo but it was a long time ago when I saw it in person.

no way it would do more than 65, those guys were on some Hippie hay. The weight is considerably more than a 310 BBC. trying to prop a boat that redlines at say 3800 is even more of an issue. Like I said I remember around 62 which is not shabby. I will look for the article or you may find it here someplace.

i'm 99.99999% sure Adib told me personally, when all was said and done, it bumped 81..... it had so much torq they couldn't load the motor enough against the governor to make enough boost early on but they DID do it.... don't remember if they went to be big diameter and big pitch prop, or used a 1.34 drive in the end as well, but the number was attained..

But this article says the diesel was 300 hp and that the boat was indeed built by Adid Mastry and that the top speed was 60.1 mph.??:confused: http://www.donzi.net/forums/showthread.php?23509-rough-water-capabilites-of-22-classic&p=195679#post195679

I'll take Buizilla's and Mr. X's word over Hot Boat's but 60.1 vs. 80+ is a big discrepancy...

I know Jim is correct if he says so. The torque is a huge factor as we all know with boats. Torque is what it can do and HP is how fast it will do it. Friend had a 33' Wellcraft cabin with a 13' beam. She did 23knots with twin 330hp 454's. With twin 315 Yanmars she did 28knots. That is a huge gain in performance while losing 30hp. I was actually surprised when I read the article on how slow it was but figured it was due to weight and prop selection.
