can you pull the Y pipe and get the block off plate in with the motor in the boat or does the motor need to come out?

Maybe, just maybe if you cut out the Y pipe w/a sawsall, and have long skinny fingers to get the bolts out...........................:wink:

Here're a couple of pictures that help to illustrate the problems...
First, the Y pipe mating surface is submerged deep into the thick part of the transom.
That makes the Y pipe an odd shape that's makes it difficult to turn and extract w/the engine in place.
If the arms were cut off from the bottom up, and you could get the bolts out.....and those are big IF's,
then the center section could "maybe" be dropped down into the bilge and retrieved.

If you have room you can slide engine forward, if not she has to come out.

you need move the engine about 5" or cut the pipe like George said, a few bolts and grounds and hose is all it takes.
