:garfield:

Hard to see $12K in this boat. Also hard to see 70 mph.

Looks all there from what the pictures show, so with a lot of TLC it could be brought back.

Not a 69 with that steering wheel, floor vent, windshield and the Donzi Marine script it could have been built around the same time Jay’s boat was built? Agree don’t see 12K or 70MPH.

Agree w/ Bob.

Period details look very similar to my boat - especially the wheel.
Not exactly sure when the second set of clamshell vents became standard but these may have been added later (they are facing the wrong way).

70? I think it could be good for 80......kilometers/hr!

The professionally restored '67 V-drive on FleaBay is a steal.......

Is the steering wheel emblem insert period correct?

Bobby, I don't know what the time range was for that windshield. A couple of years ago I listed a 1974 Ski-Sporter owned by a friend of mine in Vermont. He was the second owner, and bought the boat around 1980, and the boat had that same windshield.

In the picture of the Ski-Sporter you had, I think I saw at had the same brass plaque on the dash, saying "This DONZI was custom built for XXXXX" Paul's boat had one of those too, if that is what I saw. Not too sure after mistaking the Holman-Moody sticker for a Thunderbird emblem on someone else's dash. :)

Yep

Bill - I think that windshield was used into the mid '70s. It is kind of ugly IMO, but functional.
AND there is the cool '60s LBJ Glastron footage w/ the Secret Service in windshield Ski Sporters

I've seen the wheel on a 14 a 16 a n 18 and a 7 meter all of them were 1967 model years. the windshield was used thru-out the early years til the mid to late 70's same basic windshield the hornet had. The wheel was a teleflex touch the big steering component corp. they appeared in 67 and disappeared when the Chisholm's took over full ownership in 1968. about the same time the metal scripts went away. The prop logo was used from the get-go until full Chisholm ownership. They developed the lion and dolphin and abandoned the prop logo.

if it is a 67 there is a good chance the deck is solid glass and pvc pipe supports with no wood coring to rot.

the 3 gauges have me wondering fuel maybe one oil temp maybe 2 what's 3???? wonder what's under the hood so to speak?

Bill,
When I bought the ski sporter from the old timer in Jersey the original especially built for plate was gone so I had one made to fit the holes in the dash.

It sounds like may be enough pieces of the puzzle to indicate that the boat may in fact be a 1969 model year. Is the only way to confirm that require a look under the deck to see how/if it is reinforced with pvc pipe supports?

the early years pre 68

more info the morse shifter was not recessed so the handle was further out from the side so it was also straighter. here is the pic of the recessed shifter the base was closer to the side so the handle was bent out for clearance of the operator's hand

here is a pic of an early 18 my 67 had originally had a shifter like this

What Matty said RE: recessed shifter.

Only details I can see different from my boat are the extra clam shell vents. Since they appear to be facing the wrong way, they could've been added later.

A photo of the underside of the deck would confirm that this boat was likely built in early/mid '67. And the hull # either on the inside of the bow eye strap or on the backside of the dash or even on the tank would further narrow it down.

yes the vents could have been added, the lack of vents is a stronger indication of age. I wish I had a better angle of the picture i used in the how to identify a 16 doc. of our 16s side by side. yours was more original than mine they used a SS plate to cover the hole from the old shifter and used a customized chrysler shifter on mine. my 67 wheel was in sad shape the ravages of the sun killed it. I think they used that shifter on the eaton badged aq 200 boats with the interceptor motor. again in that time frame 67-68 eaton and interceptors gave way to volvo and holman moody.

that color combo with the solid hull and deck along with grumble green and just a white stripe was very popular in 66-67 then started to fade out ( literally) then you see the solid hull color and the contrasting white deck with hull color stripe. then in 68 it seems that yellow with black was the hot color.

How long did they ventilate the engine compartment by cutting the hole in the back seat base and cover the hole with the HVAC vent cover? I had the opportunity to checkout Jay’s wheel and without a doubt that is my favorite steering wheel. Agree the clam shell vents could have been added later.

My 1972 18 2+3 came from the factory with DONZI script clam shell vents and by that time were no longer offered. My judgment is they may have been out of stock that day and since they would use whatever was in the shop someone looked around an found them stuffed away back on a shelf and that’s how they ended up on my boat . Anyway although unusual I like them.

----Way back when I was a big shot dealer (LOL) in 1971-2 (ish) all the Donzis I ordered came with DONZI script scoops. They werent an option. That was all they had. Prior to that all the scoops came from "Algonac Cast Products". I now live about 6 miles from ACP. The owner (who died last year) told me several years ago that they didnt do the DONZI script scoops. I later found out that those scoops were made by a company in Maine. The castings from Maine werent always the best so I believe that Donzi reverted to ACP sometime in 1973-4. I saw the molds for the original scoops at ACP and could have had them remade but at the time I felt they would be too expensive to ever hope to sell. Now Donzi Direct has them and they look excellent. I dont know who makes them now but am sure someone on one of the two sights does know.........Bill S

Good recall on Algonac, I had lost sight of that. Also great to hear that the castings ended up in good hands. It is looking that the old gal needs to have someone crawl under the deck and do the final forensics work. Price aside, you certainly don't see many as unmolested as this one

Bobby

the original 16s had the seat vent as the air intake and the rear louver as the blower and outlet the seat vent remained even with the 2 clam shells 67 ish then in 68 or so when they added the 2 addt'l clam shell the seat vent went away

Since we're talking about red 16's circa 1967, here's another one:
http://www.boattrader.com/listing/1967-Donzi-ski-sporter-sixteen-347581

Again - features are very similar to mine. But the slotted wheel is no more.
Would be nice to know the hull #'s on these two boats.

And 16-412 has just surfaced on the other site.

the boat in the that ad says it is 267 which would be a 66

lucan red and grumble green were very popular colors

Right - 267
Hiding in plain sight!

And Bob in Covington's '66 Grumble Green w/ sideaways Eaton is 226.

one thing to keep in mind too, it was very common that the early 16 with eatons and the 165 200 and 210 hp interceptors were repowered in the late 60's and early 70's with the stronger faster Holman Moody 225 235 and 271 hp 289ci and 290 hp 351w with Volvo 250 packages My 67 was re-rigged in 1969 by Holman Moody in Long Beach and it was given a HM registration at that time making it a 69.
