Why does an early ski sporter show a weight of 1,500lbs and the current 16 shows 2,400? 900 is alot of gained weight!

and unfortunately the weight of the later 16 is accurate... my boat with a half tank of fuel and ordinary gear goes 2400 on the nose...

MOP, all I can do, is simply collect the info. Maybe the early flyer, I read that off of, got it wrong and it should have said 2500 lbs. But that also doesn't explain the 1150 lbs of the OB Baby, which was also taken off a flyer. It would be nice if we could just have a big hook with a scale and see what they weigh suspended on the lifting rings. :D

Wouldn't 900lbs be about the approx. weight of the engine and outdrive. Could the older 1500 lbs be "boat only" and later they expressed the weight with the weight of the power package added? Just a guess.

Hi I did the Donzi history thing on the site and found the early ski sporter brochue thats where I got the 1500lbs with a110hp Volvo and out drive. I figure a V8 added maybe 3-400 but not 900lbs. Thanks for the replies.

One would think though that with the new materials and methods of layup, that the classics would have gotten lighter over time.

On the brochure that originally came with my '66 18', 289, 2bbl.w/volvo 200 it lists the gross weight at 1,650. Sounds kind of light to me.

M.O.P., I was meaning weight of the engine and outdrive. I was looking at some Volvo and Mercruiser sites. One of them showed weights of both engine & outdrive together. It put the weight of a 350 with outdrive at 850 to 950lbs. Thats right on if you added the 1500 you got 2350 to 2450. Hey its just a guess, but the numbers are right!

See, if you use the upper end of "my theory's" figures, that would be an additional 26 lbs for a battery. That sounds about right too. Man I'm starting to believe my guess work!

How do you guys weigh 'yer boats? I have 2 possiblities I might try; could go to the county landfill. They have scales. Would probably do it if they're not busy. I hauled stuff to dump there one time in a row boat on a trailer (in the absence of a truck at the time) and I had 2 guys tell me they'd take the row boat if I was throwing it away! I declined both offers. Hey, it too is a classic (1958 Aluma-Craft)!

The other possibility is that our office has 4 old state police truck scales. I work for the Dept. of Agriculture and one guy here uses them to weigh fertilizer trucks. They'd probably work well to get a boat weight. I guess I'd have to drive the trailer on to 2 of them and then put a 3rd under the tongue jack (unhooked from my hitch). Should work well.

ran mine over the semi scales at the local truck stop... just saw the girl, let her know what i was doing and she let me unhook the trailer from the truck and whala... weight of trailer and boat. a few weeks later after the boat was on the lift i was taking the trailer home to do some maintenance and i ran it over again empty... tough way to do things but it worked... guess i could have just looked on my title or gotten my trailer weight from eagle... mighta just been easier eh...
