Steering advice

I have a 1988 Minx. The steering helm and cable is worn. Their is a lot of play in the wheel before any reaction at the transom. I will replace the helm and cable this winter. What is the benefit of the external add on steering cylinder? Will it eliminate feedback and keep the drive under more control when jumping over waves? What are most people using?
