It's very hard to believe that a month ago a new record shattering the old was set.
I thought that it would be years before anyone else decided it would be worth it to try and better the already very respectable time.

Now, when no-one was watching , no one knew he was on his way , here comes Fabio !

I like his sense of humour too .

One thing you need to remember is that he didn't do this in the summer doldrums , the very peak of the hurricane season was last week !

@ George , I thought out of everyone here , you would most enjoy this !

Buzzi is brilliant!
I love his work. His military metal boats and big RIBS are world class.

This one may stand for a while. It's such a long run to keep an average speed that high especially considering the length restriction, fuel burn, etc.

Funny, yesterday I bumped into Fertig's failed attempt from last year, and concluded I needed to check to see if he actually tried again as planned this year. Sounds like he did, and got the record, only to be bested a month later by Buzzi's team.

I too think that this one will stand for a long time .
Unlike previous challengers Fabio's boat wasn't a gussied up pleasure boat with a lot of sponsorship money behind it. Nor were the crew adventurous pleasure boaters looking for the ultimate buzz.

If this one broke (or sank) on the way over , no problem , we'll just build another better one and do it again.

I don't know the rules for this challenge and whether there is any stipluations for the type/class of boat that enters but I wonder what Chris Fertig is saying right now.

One thing is for sure , as his fuel load lightened he must have been flying. And it wasn't calm out there either .
Hell , when my gran went to NY for the first time it was on a plane that took 17 hours ! :kingme:

One more note, if you look at the crew pictures, it's obvious Buzzi is/was the oldest member by a long shot.
I'll be 68 next month and he's a year older. Ya gotta give him a lot of credit for endurance. I have no desire to get beat up for 17 hours, he actually did it.

Have to admit , he does look great for his age. Must be that Italian diet and plenty of red wine ! (hint , George .. )

It's nowhere on any local websites yet but on the local tv news last night it was reported that Customs really harrassed him on arrival. Not only him , but Ross Perot who has (amongst plenty of other toys) one of his big RBI's . Apparently Ross had gotten permission to go out and escort Fabio in the last 2-3 miles and he got a good tongue lashing from Customs as well.
Apparently every last bit of paperwork needed on Buzzi's part was in order and immediately available.

We used to have a very PC incorrect joke back in the 60's out here ...
''How do you create a monster ?''
The punchline is still as appropriate now as it was back then !

I can see Branson trying it sooner or later.

Would like to see what one of the US's special ops boats could do.

I agree that this is just the type of thing that would appeal to Branson. Mind you , he's been a bit quiet lately on the daredevil challenge front.

I see over on OSO Fertig has commented on it in a very gentlemanly and sporting fashion.
However , our own Dr Burnie ( the 2nd last record holder of the event) has commented and as I suspected the class issue has arisen ... at least in his eyes.

The editor of Boating Mag has entered the forum and clarified that it is simply open to all boats under 40 feet.

Dr Burnie's foray into it is quite a funny story in itself truth be known .

Well , Fertig is up to it again.

One thing in his favor is that it's been an incredibly calm summer out here so far.

I still think that it's unlikely that he'll outdo Fabio's time though.

The fact that he had to stop to change a prop , even though it was done quickly 67 miles off shore , really ate into the record by Fabio.

I got to see some of Buzzi's work when he hooked up with Reggie and went racing for awhile. They also fitted some of his surface drives to a set of Innovation 600's in what they called a 51 Lightning. They only built three of them, but that boat was one impressive ride. You could light a cigar and cruise at 90 throwing a big roost. Cool ride and some very unique engineering.

Well blow me over ...

15hrs 48 mins .. wow !

Wonder what it would have been if they didn't have to make the two stops that they did ?

Now I wonder if Fabio will decide that he can do better ?

If you go back and watch Fabio's claim to Italian technology superiority, I would guess he'd have to!

Team America!!!

I followed this on and off yesterday on thehulltruth. Exceptionally cool endeavor. They apparently went into planning mode as soon as their record was beaten by Fabio Buzzi. They built a killer Skater with twin Cummins Diesels, Arneson drives, 800 gal of fuel (they actually started the race with +/- 640gal) and Simrad electronics. Props were the weak link throughout testing and the actual record attempt; they lost one of the 44P:embarasse props right out of the harbor and had to change it in the water. They did the rest of the run with an unmatched set of props so both motors had to be throttled independently to stay in a straight line. Lost another one 3/4 through the race but limped her in. Heck yes. :checkered: Good job guys!

Updated 'local' news thread with more pics and video.

http://bernews.com/2013/08/video-photos-ny-to-bermuda-record-broken/

A great show of determination in face of a few problems that could have put them out of the running.
I bet they hated having mismatched props for most of the trip.

I'll say one thing though. Approaching this over sized reef in the dark is not for the faint of heart. Modern electronics or not. We have more shipwrecks per sq mile than any other place on earth , and 99% of them weren't even destined for here.

If I'm out after dark (never) it's idle speed only , and I'm supposed to know where stuff is :shocking:

So George , how long do you think it'll be before Fabio surfaces again with something even better than what he had last time ? If anyone can do it , it's him.

I don't know how long, but I think I'm confident of one thing, it won't be in one of his military hulls.

I wonder how long it would take for his design team to come up the right package?
