Ugly turn of events

Did my usual Friday dinner run but didn't make it home. Hit unknown submerged object in the main river channel ay about 40 MPH

Tough break glad it did nit sink and you and yours are Ok! Insurance should cover all but your deductible.

No one hurt and already taking to the insurance company - Progressive with $0.00 deductible. Deductible goes down each year no claim is made and I've been with them for 12 years with no claim.

She was taking on a little water - bilge pump would kick on about every 10 minutes. I got a tow to the closest ramp about 100 yards away. Friends met me at the ramp and took me to my truck and trailer. Got her out of the water in less than 30 minutes.

Did you spin the coupler? IS the drive OK or busted up by the trim ram, hard to see. New transom assembly at least.

Tim, I am glad you (and your passengers) are ok. I could of been a lot worse.

Glad to see the bilge pump was working. (I should maybe someday check to see if mine functions).

It looks to me like the bell housing and the trim cylinders were the fuse.

Unless there's internal damage to the drive, I see about $1000.00 in parts.

...wow ! So glad to hear you & Deb are okay ! That had to be a scary feeling when you hit whatever it was....

Fix is certainly close. Don't know about the input shaft or coupler yet but everything else is trashed.

Just wondering - could this have been a catastrofic mechanical failure without hitting anything? Want to firm up my position when the insurance adjuster looks it over. The prop and lower drive look fine.

At least you got to bring home the parts. Sucks but you have to look at the bright side sometimes. You could be paying someone to pull it up off the bottom with damage like that. Glad everyone is OK.

Woah. That must've startled the sh!t out of you when it hit.
Makes me think about installing a second bilge pump just to cover a worst case scenario.

If you had hit something that could do that much damage, you would see evidence of the damage on the drive. My guess is that it was a mechanical failure if you don't see the drive damage as you stated. Bill

Got a better look today now the the 2 days of monsoons have moved on. The upper and lower drive housings have major cracking, helmet shattered, gimbal ring broken, 1 ram sheared, one ram bent...

UPDATE - took the prop off and can now see that it is bent on 1 ear too

Sorry you had such extensive damage done to your outdrive.
Glad everyone is OK; and your boat did not sink as a result of that unknown underwater object strike.

If I were you I would put that damaged & bent prop back on the wrecked outdrive before the insurance adjuster arrives to inspect all the outdrive damage.
This would prove you indeed had an underwater object strike; and not a catastrophic outdrive internal "grenade" type failure.

Hope you are back on the water soon !

My guess is you hit a floating or partially submerged tire. Chances are good you never heard or felt the thump. Hope your ins. co. will cover all the damage. Good luck.

I have to ask, how did you come up with a partially submerged tire? :confused::bonk:

I would think a log or a sea monster would have been a better bet for the middle of a river channel. :biggrin:

I've seen my share of many, many, race boat crash results and I've never seen that much damage! I have never, ever, seen trim rams get broke in half.
Amazing that no one got hurt.

Progressive approved the necessary repairs. Sounds like I'm going to be better than before the hit:

New style Bravo I drive
Drive shaft assembly
New gimbal ring assembly and bearing
New bell housing assembly
2 trim cylinders
Drive and exhaust bellows
Coupler assembly
Shift cable assembly
Numerous hoses, hydraulic hoses, seals, gaskets, etc
Prop

A lot of $ but none out of pocket...

Congrats on getting what you wanted.

I would think that a new drive and a complete transom assembly would be the way to go. Pre-assembled, no rebuilding, just bolt in and go. Then sell off the parts that are salvageable on Ebay.

Fix - you must have missed it it. They are covering the gimbal ring / bearing and coupler...
