Is a Bravo preferred on an 18 over an Alpha? Alphas are probably faster and cost less to replace. At what point is a Bravo preferred? I am looking at an 18 with EFI and Bravo. Thanks in advance for your input.

I wouldn't say preferred. It is a different drive that will handle much more power. You will be happy with the bravo in the long run.

What Bob said.

However, some here would say you'll lose about 3 MPH on the top end w/the Bravo vs. the Alpha.

An 18 with a Bravo and small block... I highly doubt you would ever have issues with the drive unless it was totally abused.

The reason why you are seeing the later model boats with Bravo drives is because Merc started tightening the restrictions on the Alpha at some point. Now they say 300HP and 65MPH is the limit on the Alpha. You are probably looking at a top speed just higher than 65 so Bravo it is:biggrin.:

Having driven both set-ups, the Bravo handles better at speed.
