Ok, maybe this has been done before, but I thought it was time for seeing some Donzi eye candy. Post up your favorite "money shot" or two of your Donzi. It's ok if your picture has you and your significant other in it, then we get to know who is running that sweet boat. Let's try to keep it to just posting pictures with a few details about the boat (model, length, year, engine, when it was purchased, a little history, where you typically run, etc). This can become kind of an informal registry of sorts. So show em if you got em! **UPDATE** thanks for posting the great pictures everyone, this is great!!

I didn't want to go first, but I am adding the pic of our 1966 Donzi Ski Sporter with a Ford 289 HIPO and the old Eaton outdrive. My wife Janet and I bought it from my brother (who bought it from my Dad). Been in the family since new, crazy as it sounds, this is the boat from the copy of Boating news with the article. My dad bought it new at a nice discount from the Newport Beach Boat Dealer (Balboa Marine) when after the demo run, the throttle cable came loose and the boat banged into the dock (He said this damn thing, how about I knock 30% off the price...LOL). We use it anyplace we can get to near our home just south of Seattle, Washington...we had it on Lake Chelan, Lake Washington and a few others. We are usually the "little boat" that needs leaded premium, but we have a lot of fun with it.

1985 Criterion SS, last one built. Custom built for the owner of Donzi just before he sold. Came with a 454 370 h.p. I put a Gale Banks twin turbo 1,000 H.P.
Pulled that out I put a Weind supercharger on the original engine. Boat Lake Ontario .. The pic was taken at 1,000 Islands by Dave McDonald...Ed71335

1994 22C originally shipped to a dealer 12/93 in Ft Worth, TX. Moved to Tennessee in 2005 with second owner. He moved to Alabama in 2009 I believe and I bought it in 8/2011 for my 42 B-Day. I have wanted one since I was a fetus. She has the original 454/310hp B1 with a Mirage 23 and does low 60's. I think I have about 360 hours on it now and bought with 325 or so. Boat is now located in South Tampa Bay just North of Sarasota on the Manatee River so not all salt water use.

WOW BOB !!!

Love the rare & original Eaton/Interceptor engine & outdrive.

I remember when these drives first appeared in South Jersey, at the old Ventnor Boatworks which at the time was then building 3/8" marine five ply plywood clinker-built sea skiffs with the first Inboard-outboard drives, as they were then called that I ever saw. Ventnor sadly closed for good soon after these Eaton drives first appeared.

I have not seen a running Eaton drive ,with a Interceptor Ford engine, in running condition for at least 35 years !

It has taken three years of messing around with this rendition of the beast to get her where I want her. Kudos to Brain Orlandi, Ron Potter, Phil Lipschutz, Bertram Boy, Ted M, Jeff Johnson, and many others for the highly qualified and excellent advice and work. This may look like your garden variety red 22 Classic, but let's just say she is a sleeper!

'99 Classic 18, stock 350 MAG Alpha, tabs, converted to internal hydraulic steering. I added a couple of grab handles for the back seat guests. I have customized the interior with mahogany dash and side panels. Also changed the Bennett tabs indicator from black to white and changed tab switches to the same type as the rest of the stock switchgear. I did not build the wheel but I did the rest of the woodworking.

Matty , you must be kidding .. Is that really plumbed in there ?

BTW , if someone knows how to move pics from elsewhere . feel free to take one from post 20 or so and attach it . All my pics were stored at a place I once called 'work' ...

Thanks Maddad , I think the one of it tied up at the dock would have been cool though seeing there has to be a ton of people here who don't know that the centre console St T was one the original 4 line up way back when... if I only knew how to mess with this computer thingy a bit better . . :banghead:

Otherwise , beggars can't be choosers ... lol

Matty , OT or otherwise , I've seen a few option sheets for the old girls but never seen a 'head' listed on the baby ones.. Now when you get to the 24' series , yes .. But it must have been very rare to see such a factory option on a boat under 22' back then.

But what a selling point !

'Honey, I'm buying a 19' 60mph sportboat'

Significant other .. ' Well ,I'm never setting foot on it ! ! '

'But it has a toilet baby' ..

S/O ..' Hey , this thing is starting to look attractive , when can we go for a spin ?' :kingme:

Purchased this 1988 Minx late last summer after much research on this site. I saw my first Donzi Minx in 1991 and loved it at first sight. Swore I'd have one someday....and no other would do ! It's hull # 165...so the second last Minx built....and as far as I know the only yellow and white one ever built. Previous owner said it was special ordered. I believe he also indicated that the teak swim platform was also special ordered but I'm not certain. It's all original with a 350 mag and Alpha one....but I've had a 383 stroker built over the winter for it. Now that the summer is here....I'm having second thoughts about the stroker and whether I should just keep the boat stock....since it's running fine and has but 428 hours on it. I'm open to opinions, boys....what should I do ??

All my boating is on Okanagan Lake in beautiful Kelowna, BC.

Ghost
05-12-2012, 12:41 AM
Congrats on the boat, looks awesome.

Some would say pulling a motor that runs fine is like taking points off the board. But you did build the 383 already. And I know what Billy Squier and Clarence Carter would say... :)

Welcome!

Great looking boat. I love the yellow.

You had best make sure your trim tabs are all the way up before loading back onto the trailer.

Regarding the engine; you must have some "gear head" tendencies or you wouldn't have built the 383 engine for the boat. But it all comes down to what do you want to use the boat for?

You can always install the 383 and store the original engine to put back in the boat at some point in the future if you decided you want to sell it, and believed originality would bring more money.

BUIZILLA

Thanks for the great suggestions and comments guys ! I had some issues with the carb at the end of last season and believe that the stock Rochester Q jet probably needs rebuilding. I think I'll rebuild the carb and run it a few times to get a proper "baseline" for how it runs with the 350 mag. Then I'll probably put the 383 stroker in and store the 350 . Over the winter I also ordered new cockpit carpeting , some hatch struts and a full upgraded stereo system. But the sound the engine makes...has been the best sound of all ! It's amazing to me how many 20- 30 year old guys give me the "thumbs up" when they see the Donzi ! I guess they think it's pretty cool for a 63 year old, "grey hair" !!

Can't wait to get it out of winter storage so I can polish it up and get it out on the lake....
