I bought a sailboat last month w/ a few friends and the old name consisted of 18 10" vinyl letters applied to topsides which had been recently Awl-Gripped. Since we are renaming the boat and need to remove old letters, I asked around and was told to Google "Pin Stripe Removal" and found this:

http://www.amazon.com/AES-Industries-Smart-Eraser-Adaptor/dp/B00488DDB8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335462127&sr=8-1

Basically it is a gummy rubber/eraser disk w/ an adaptor for an electric drill.

It worked great. Each side took about 20 minutes and the surface underneath is perfect.

I was especially happy as I screwed up one side of the Donzi several years ago while changing decals.

You can borrow your wifes hair dryer and apply heat to decals (constantly) and they will come right off. Goo Gone will remove the glue residue. Make sure you put the Hair dryer back where you found it.........:kingme:

Mike -

We tried a hair dryer at first. It was slow going and left a lot of adhesive - perhaps b/c air temp was only in the 40s!

The disk worked very well and cost all of $12. I hate picking and scraping at old letters. The friend who recommended the product used it on paint and was satisfied too.

All good Jay, FYI, You do have to get decals warm - hot and keep hot air to them. Get em started (finger nail) and they will pull off. Everybodys get a hair dryer. :)

Yup, I've got one of those that I've used on really old, large stripes from 10-20 year old boats. That and 3M woodgrain stripe remover (if they still make it) seem to do the trick when heat alone won't.
