...seems I like to do things the hard way.

So as you know I'm bringing back to life an OMC King Cobra classic 22.

I've got most of it ready to go but I'm wrestling with the ESA shift interrupt to be used with the DUI HEI marine distributor that I purchased (http://www.performancedistributors.com/marinedui.htm). It sounded like a really nice piece of hardware, it looks good and probably is but I'm a bit lost on how to integrate an ESA module. ...I've wondered how important it is with the cone clutch drive unit but I'm not willing to run without one since I know it has to be possible to figure it out.

MSD has a whole kit with easy to read instructions on how to rig and wire their ignition including their own ESA module but like I said I seem to like to do things the hard way!

I've tried to call CDI as I read they make an ESA module that might work but haven't reached them yet.

Anyone care to weigh in?

Thanks,

Jay

Pretty sure the ESA shift interrupt is a ground switch it will either ground or unground the circuit to cut the current. I think if you use the same hot lead that went to the old distributor everything should work the same.
If you could post the schematic for the new DUI (http://www.donzi.net/forums/#) HEI marine distributor that would be a help.

Info I found "DUI is the manufacture, they said "Splice it into the tach wire that goes to the negative side of the DUI coil(which is in the cap)"".

-Joseph,

I'll see if I can scan in what I've got. The problem is that the OMC boats had the ESA in the ignition module. I've pulled that out and will have to source an aftermarket or mercruiser or something electronic shift assist or interruptor. ...not quite sure what the difference is yet.

I'm also going to switch my throttle shifter to dual stick Livorsi set up so I'll have to engineer that change shortly. ...it will all come together pretty soon I'm sure. ...besides I think I have a friendly bet with Scott Ray (jraysray) as to who will get their boat back in the water first so I better get after it. -smart money is on him but I'll work at it.

Copied and pasted in here in case anyone else goes looking for this info:

King Cobra Shifting problems solved..
Those who know my 22, have seen the issues I have had with shifting out of gear with my King Cobra, since I had no way of interrupting the motor to shift easily out of gear. And last week after suffering some severe rope burns I decided I needed to do something about it.
My solution was installing a MSD ignition box along with their Shift Assist Module. My shift bracket had a switch on it, but did not operate anything since the Spitfire ignition was removed and replaced with an HEI distributor. The shift switch now triggers the MSD shift assist and interrupts the motor now. The module was removed from the HEI distributor and replaced with a MSD bypass cable, basically converting the distributor to a magnetic pickup type.
If anyone would like more info, e-mail me.

After adjusting my shift cable prior to last weekend's run, I think I had the opposite problem - the interupter was engaging even in neutral - hard to start. Or a least I hope that was the problem. Tomorrow's outing will tell. Anyway, I've been told the KC drive with cone clutches don't need the interupter in order to shift. Is yours pre-cone clutch (i.e., no hum on top of drive)?

My KC is the cone clutch type and yes most say you don't need it if you have the idle set low enough, but I have been still fine tuning my carb and getting the idle set to where I'm happy with it and also with the mixture adjustment screws.
I think the torque of the new motor also has increased the load on the clutch too. It's a 10 year old drive hanging off the back and felt I should do something to make it easier on it and shifting gears. From what I can tell it's going to be very smooth shifting from now on and alot better maneuvering around other boats and the docks.
You can see in the following pics where I located the box on the transom. MSD provides all the wiring you need and then some to make the installation easy. I had to only add one wire to ground my distributor coil. Wire harnesses are long enough to where I had to coil some of them up and tie up.
