Texas has some great boating and even better lakes. Even though we have been through some tough times due to massive drought and subsequent wild fires we are determined to get on some lakes this season and like Marvair say’s “get a good fresh water flush”.

Lake Conroe is a great lake that is very close to Houston. I’m looking to do an over-night fun run. There are a lot of boater friendly places to stop at as well as lodging.
Below are some links to view so you can get a feel for the place. Once we get enough “I’m in’s” we will consult and drive down a date and lodging.

Disclaimer- I have never boated on this lake. Well, once I putted around on a snail boat. Didn't get very far

Date: TBD (to be determined)

I spoke with a coworker and asked about Conroe and he said there's a 45mph speed limit on the lake. His boat will only do 57 so not concerned but one other coworker has a DCB and has been pulled over a few times and said the are ass....es.

Is Travis too far?

We boated some on Lake Conroe in 1979-1980 in a 15' whaler. We would ski in a specific area until stumps kept appearing where we would ski as the water level dropped. The stumps\trees were not cleared when the lake was created. We moved to boating on the San Jacinto river/lake but that river got extremely shallow during droughts.

Let me know, used to run "Corn-row" alot back in the day.... My first trip as Capt of The Revenge was there. It does get crowded on the weekends with about a million wave runners. Still its pretty cool and lots of littel coves to explore. Plus Papas on the Lake for refreshments.

Guys, my sons college room-mates family has a house on Conroe, as well as a wakeboard boat, and all they have talked about it not being able to get around due to super low water. We have had some rain lately but I am not sure if that has improved the water level on Conroe...45 mph speed limit may not work either. I have always wanted to go to Canyon Lake but don't know what it's like or if there is a place to stay. We have anymore 80 degree days like today and I will be ready to go!

I love Travis and we have rented a large houseboat there before for a week and it was a fun time...all the comforts of home, all stainless kitchen, four bedrooms, big screen tv, hot tub on top, bar on top, AC. When we needed groceries we just called and they brought them out via a ski boat. When the water comes up this would be a fun thing to do...they rent them up to over 100 feet or something.

Corn-row was an easy weekend or day run. Got a vote for Canyon too. Prob is if Travis is down Canyon is way down but it is deep. Keep em coming.

Anyone run Lake Summerville?

Ever run Houston? It's beautiful and close... South of 1960 it's pretty stump-free. Some new restaurants have opened, I hear.

(I almost hate to post this, it's a very well-kept secret....)

Palacious is another place that would be fun to go and explore. I've thought about taking the sailboat but it is a little too shallow (and a long ride). Loading the Donzi up on a trailer and running down there could be fun. The Luther hotel is pretty cool ...old and a bit worn out but loaded with character.

Never been to Lake Summerviille. Another place on my list is the false river in New Roads LA. ...near Baton Rouge but I'm really getting ahead of myself since I still need to get it running and take it on it's maiden voyage.

I have a buddy who goes to Somerville all the time and he loves it. It's over 11,000 surface acres...the link below will take you to some info on it. I just texted him and he says no speed limit but the water is down a bit. It apparently received some pretty good rains about mid month that brought the water up quite a bit.

If ya'll are thinking about making a trip as far as Travis you might also consider Rockport sometime...maybe like a spring or summer weekend get-together. As many of you may already know, it is about a three hour drive as well but plenty of water. We often stay on Key Allegro Isle (Texas Riviera) and there are lots of rentals on and off the water. Lots of different runs to make in a boat that can be run separately or combined for a half day or full day run, or an hour run for that matter. Key Allegro has a nice Marina with covered deck on the water that serves food and spirits and it could be a starting point or and end point or both. You can run out of Key Allegro on either end and make a big loop into Aransas bay then come back in at the other end of the island. Aransas Bay is protected from the gulf by San Jose Island (or Saint Joes as we have always referrred to it). It can get rough some afternoons but it never gets too bad. You can also run south to Aransas Pass and/or Port Aransas and there are restaurants and Marinas along the way. Key Allegro was our home port for our Donzi back in the mid to late sixties.

its up four feet. still limited ramps open.
I got a place there, also. Water in front of house...shallow water. Makes view better, but not accessibility.
Restaurants have fixed piers....4 feet down...

I seem to have gotten a big fat ehhhhhhh about Conroe but its still on the list.

Other locations are.

Lake Travis
Lake Houston
Canyon Lake
Lake Summerville
RockPort (Key Allegro Isle)
Palacious

Seems we have peeps with experience at all these places but Palacious.

I have to admit the Rockport suggestion REALLY has me wanting to go there. I went as a kid but not in the 60's.

Everybody has been to Travis AND it's ALWAYS a good time.

Sumerville / Conroe / Lake Houston can be a day trip or easy overnighter if needed. I have camped Summerville if anyone is interested in doing that.

So looks like we got some thinking to do. I'm gonna say Rockport and Travis for sure. Anyone else want to jump in?

Guys - I am always up for a good time and NOT afraid to trailer my baby ANYWHERE!! that being said, I already have 7 weekend trips planned for this year and that's not including any Reel Deel trips we make to film video for shows. May is hammered, and October will be WAY to busy with The Reel Deel-Palooza.... but if a trip is set up in Jun-Sep.... I will make every effort to be there:yes:

The Lively Family is currently in soccer, track, and baseball season...practices and games all week and pony baseball practice on Saturday. That said, I am always a candidate for a day trip or possibly an overnighter at a nearby lake or bay...wife may or may not be able to join me.

Like Jefe, my June through September time frame is better for a bigger weekend and/or weekday trip to Rockport or Travis. It is likely that on any bigger trip I would want to incorporate wife and/or kids but they can be as involved or uninvolved as need be. I can leave them with waverunners and other toys. I have rented a house on Key Allegro that could definately be shared (5 bdrm 5 bath) or it could serve as a main meeting, party house during a Donzi get-together. Big patio, pool, dock (not necessarily conducive to docking a bunch of boats unless water is fairly calm), ect, overlooking Aransas Bay http://www.keyallegro.com/RentalListing.asp?ID=14972 . It is on the higher end of the price scale and although there are many for much less that are just as nice or nicer...I think this is the only one that has a pool overlooking Aransas Bay.
